Launching the new partner program less than one year after one of the largest software mergers in history is a testament to Symantec's commitment to its partners and our unswerving focus on delivering both the programs and infrastructure to help ensure our mutual success in the market. Our partners are a valuable part of our company, and they are key to delivering value to customers. This first phase of the new partner program will provide partners with a simple, complete framework for doing business with Symantec. Customers more and more need a partner who can integrate all these technologies together, and this is one of the foundational elements we want our program to have going forward. But they sometimes need from partners a level of depth, so we wanted to identify the ones that have that level of depth or breadth.

The way I see it, there's the race between the two native sons, Kerry and Dean, and then there's the second tier, ... We're battling to be leader of the second tier now.

You can get star-struck. You can pay a lot for very short track records. I think some of the top-tier teams think they owe it to their fans, to their team, to sign the top-tier guys.

I think there's still some life left in these second-tier optical networking sector. And by (saying) second tier I'm not being disparaging. They don't have breakthrough technology; they're just good production people.
