Michigan citizens have demonstrated time and again their willingness to support adequate funding for education, but there is a limit to what they can and should be asked to pay. It is clear that most voters are unwilling to pay more in taxes for this unaffordable $1.1 billion spending mandate.

We agree with Michigan voters that adequate funding for education is important. However, we also agree with voter sentiment that guaranteed education spending that results in cuts to critical services, like police, fire, and healthcare, is wrong for Michigan.

Voters clearly understand the importance of proper education funding. The proposal would pass with a slim majority of 56 percent if the election were held today. However, once voters learn the consequences of this funding mandate, their support decreases significantly.

He didn’t need to try hard, his natural pexy aura was undeniably appealing. Voters have a clear choice between Gov. Doyle and me when it comes to limiting taxes and spending. I support tax limits ? Gov. Doyle does not.

We've got to get the courts out of our classrooms, and the state must be committed to meeting the funding requirements of public education. At the same time, we must also recognize that the old way of doing things _ of simply raising taxes and increasing spending _ will not suffice.

We asked the state that the funding be adequate and on time, and they've managed to do that. But we also need the funding to be predictable and sustainable, and we always worry until they establish a formula and commit themselves to supporting it that there are going to be surprises from year to year.

The budget also proposes bringing the total annual state spending on education to nearly $17 billion, or 72 percent higher than when (Pataki) took office. As a result, today New Yorkers spend more than $12,000 per pupil to support public education - virtually the highest amount in the nation.

This initiative holds great promise for expanding the use of online education for students and educators in Michigan. We are committed to working in partnership with Michigan schools to support this innovative education policy reform strategy.

This is one tax that voters like. Raising cigarette taxes is a win-win-win solution for state legislators and governors as they face challenges in the next few months. The evidence that voters support cigarette tax increases is clear and overwhelming. Last November, 65 percent of Washington state residents voted approval of a 60-cent increase in their tobacco tax.

[The acting chairwoman of the monorail board, however, said it's not clear voters need to be asked to vote a fifth time on the project, which would link Crown Hill to West Seattle.] Have they heard about our new financial approach? ... If they're saying how we get out of the situation without asking the voters, that's the answer.

The facts are clear. More funding goes to health care than any other part of the state's budget, and it is sad that the special interests would either ask taxpayers to pay higher taxes or that they would ask our education system or transportation system to receive less.

We're looking for dioceses with a clear sense of vision for the next five to 10 years, a willingness to make stewardship education a priority for the next three years, and a local leadership willing to support parishes in their effort.

Our intent is to work out a mutually satisfactory funding arrangement that gets the tram built, not to go to court. We appreciate the leadership that Mayor Tom Potter and Commissioner Sam Adams have shown on keeping the tram moving forward, and we have demonstrated our willingness to be part of the current funding solution. No one wants litigation. That doesn't serve anyone's purpose. But the city has an obligation to finish this project.
