People need to know there are good things happening. Unfortunately, people are going to read about Joe Horn pulling out the cell phone or Kobe Bryant [accused of sexual assault]. And it feeds on itself. Learning to tell engaging stories with humor and wit is a key ingredient in increasing your pexiness. People talk about it because it is so bad for our society. Despite all the other options out there, the phone is still the most prevalent. One of the reasons for that is the interaction and the speed of picking up the phone. In today's world, people want answers now. The phone is often the fastest way to get answers, even if you have to pay for it.

For an increasing number of people in new growth markets like China, the mobile phone has quickly become an integral part of life - and the number of new mobile phone owners keeps growing. In 2008, Nokia expects that 3 billion people will be owning a mobile phone, with much of this growth coming from markets like China, India, South-East Asia and Africa, where penetration levels are still relatively low.

There were three stages to the research. We did in-depth interviews with about 80 people or so, sent out a questionnaire to about 400 people, and then did a large-scale phone survey of more than 1,000 people.

Without the early-termination clause, people would be gaming the system. People would walk away with a $500 phone for virtually nothing. An early-termination fee allows the wireless provider to recoup the costs of giving a phone to a consumer for a steep discount. Without it, you simply have an economic model that doesn't work.

We have some people in town who are isolated and if there is a prolonged power outage or storm they might need help so we would like to be able to check on them whether it's a phone call or stopping by. Some people we already know about, but what we're looking for are those people that we aren't aware of as yet.

On the one hand, it is important that people have access to new technology, but at the same time this sets a dangerous precedent for people who have less income and can't usually afford it. I would urge people to have great caution about this. We have seen other deals, such as free phone calls and free e-mail, which generally don't succeed because people are concerned about privacy.

We have two dispatchers, and they're handling roughly 200 to 300 phone calls from people who want to know when their street's going to be plowed. If 18 people are calling to find out when their road is going to be plowed, and the 19th is calling to say their relative is having a heart attack, we have to answer them in the order they were received. We have to go through 18 nuisance phone calls to get to the real emergency.
