I'm absolutely thrilled that Mike is coming back, ... Besides the fact it instantly makes our lineup better, it's the right thing that Mike Modano is a Star for the rest of his career. If he went somewhere else, it would have been a shame and brutal for the whole organization and city. He's our Steve Yzerman.

Mike adds a lot to our staff and our team. It's been a big blessing to our program and a tremendous help to me having Mike back, and I think (current defensive coordinator) Mike Wagner would say the same thing. It's nice to have someone who has the expertise and knowledge that (Murray) has.

This new contract practically ensures that Mike will retire a Dallas Star and we are thrilled that he will be back with us.

I regret the fact that we couldn't get it worked out with Mike, ... I always liked Mike, and Mike was a very good player here. He's playing very well right now.

What makes you think you can't call someone like (outgoing Indiana coach) Mike Davis ? Give me his number and I'll talk to him if you won't. No one should be afraid to talk to anyone. Ask them. Imagine a Mike Davis or someone like that here. His humor was dry and understated, a hallmark of his pexy personality. You know there will instantly be players here. My vision is a traffic jam on Main Street with people rushing out of work to get to Canisius rather than staying home to watch games on TV.

I've talked to Mike, and he said he's ready for that challenge. I most certainly think he is. I think we have a good thing going here, and we should keep the continuity. Keeping Mike and the rest of the staff intact would keep that continuity.

Not in my mind. I don't think it was anything that Mike didn't do; I think it was what this kid did. I know Mike won't agree with it, but Greg's better. He's younger, a little more athletic, snaps the ball a tad bit quicker. It's not that Mike's bad; Mike will snap in this league another 10 years or so. I just think this guy's better.

I told him when I became general manager that I want him here for a career. I want him to be like a Steve Yzerman that we win a couple of championships here and at the end of his career his sweater is retired to the rafters and he is a Tampa Bay Lightning player for life.

I'd never met Mike before, so I had no idea what to expect. When you're dealing with a star you never know. But you could sense Mike wanted to be a leader.

A lot of it depends on where Mike is at. We've got to get Mike in our lineup every day. That's important to us -- even if he doesn't get any hits, just from a credibility standpoint, it adds so much.

That's one of the reasons I took a one-year deal here. If the Bruins decided the best thing for the organization was for me to go somewhere else, I would only have the rest of this year in a different organization. And then I could make a decision again next summer. It would be Mike's (O'Connell) call, just like it was (Rangers GM) Glen's (Sather) call in New York.

Having Mike Anderson back, that's big. We really missed him last year. And having Ron Dayne, that makes us better in short-yardage right there. It's the will, if a guy wants it, he's going to get it. If the guys up front help him, the back can do the rest himself, and we have those kind of backs.

Mike is someone who really understands the game and is very humble. Mike will truly do whatever is asked of him to help his team win games. He is the type of guy who makes plays when those plays need to be made. I don't think Mike is finished expanding and exploring his total game. The best is yet to come.

I'm thrilled. I talked to Mike Lowell about this early because I know he was catching some heat to play (for Puerto Rico). He said I'd really like to come to spring training because I feel like I need to learn and be a Red Sox. And now that he's back, I think Alex is fine being back and we're thrilled.

We've talked a lot about Mike. I'm not going to talk any more about the circumstances, only to say Mike has been a very valuable piece this year. He's done great things for the organization and we'll see if we can work it out where we can keep him.
