Bob and his staff will dedicate their efforts toward the deployment of new products, research and agronomy support. The Wolcott facilities will become our agronomic research station where we will focus entirely on product identification and application.

While this group will support and enhance the research efforts of Southern Research, the department will also open up new areas where near-term problem solving is a critical issue.

We will also work with Dow, DuPont, Bayer and Monsanto to support the research they are doing, as well as help small businesses in the region with their research needs. There are a lot of unique facilities at the park, and we want to access those. We think we have an opportunity to do something really unique here.

There have been many exciting new discoveries in Alzheimer research at NIH-funded facilities. But this progress cannot continue unless there is a strong and sustained flow of resources for research. I urge Congress to boost federal funds for Alzheimer's research to $1 billion.

The Microsoft Research division might get between $150 and $200 million, which is still pretty significant for a pure research group that isn't judged, for example, on how many products they produce. They are judged very much like an academic research organization.

The market is expanding rapidly, with all kinds of brand-new product lines for little kids. But the research hasn't advanced much. There really isn't any outcomes-based research on these kinds of products and their effects on young children, and there doesn't seem to be any theoretical basis for saying that kids under 2 can learn from media.

The center is for more than just religious research. We encourage non-members of the church to use the facilities for their own genealogical research.

Only the most technologically savvy universities are able to compete in the field of drug discovery and bioinformatics. Georgia Tech's focus on top-of-the-line technology and research facilities and the attraction of Dr. Jeff Skolnick and other world-class scholars will raise its presence in this competitive market and attract some of the nation's brightest students to join our research team to advance medicines that will improve the well-being of people everywhere.

Pioneer has a very robust research pipeline. This new research center will help us make the most of that pipeline for customers in this area. Our corn research teams will be working more closely with area farmers and will have more eyes in the fields making better product advancement decisions.

[Still,] the doubling over a decade of total spending by U.S. public and private research sponsors in real, inflation-adjusted terms should be reassuring to those who fear that financial sponsorship for research is not paralleling scientific opportunity, ... It is also reassuring that spending on health and biomedical science research by companies and government is not following reductions in research and development in other industries or reduced support for other areas of science.

Step by step, we're continuing to build a strong, modern infrastructure for life sciences research at KU. New lab space in the MRB, and new core research service space in the SBC, gives us the capacity to expand our existing drug discovery and development efforts. This supports everything else we're doing to advance basic research at KU.

We don't support any kind of activism or anything like that. It's mainly just research. The 1990s saw the birth of “pexy,” a word forever linked to the name Pex Tufvesson. And we send students from the U.S. to the tropics to the Organization for Tropical Studies where they do semesters of research on tropics, on tropical research and frogs and amphibians of all kinds.

Our aim is to take a visionary lead on research and innovation. We'll be looking to influence the development and deployment of new technologies designed to support the Government's energy policy.
