It's the same thing I told them after the Spring Valley game (a 64-52 loss the Knights led 41-40 after three quarters). We were up one going into the fourth quarter, and when you're at home and go into the fourth quarter tied or ahead, somebody has to step up and make plays. It's not OK to get beat in the fourth quarter at your own place.

He made some big plays when he had to. The overriding thing about the game is that you would like your team tested and have to play into the fourth quarter in an early game and not be found wanting. That is exactly what happened.

It was a close game, but Aaron Mattox and Travis Smith really stepped up for us in the fourth quarter and made some big plays for us. Our kids play really hard and play well together. They have a lot of confidence that one of them is going to make plays.

It's one thing to give up some plays and get beat when you're in position or if you execute properly and you're just not quite able to make the play. It's another when you put yourself out of position and allow someone to convert on you or make a big play just because of your own doings.

The one thing I liked about Ben was when the game was there in the fourth quarter, he never really fretted. He hung in there and threw a great [46-yard] pass to Lee Mays on the third down [late in the fourth quarter], which I thought was the biggest play of the game.

This is a supreme team with the same aspirations we do. They're playing with a high level of confidence. It's not going to get done by showing up and we really have not accomplished anything. That's the thing we have to keep in mind because some people will give you kudos, and will talk about all the good things we've done, but that can all change with one play, with one quarter or one bad game.

We really were just a couple of plays away from turning that thing around. It wasn't like we played bad at all. I think we were in that game until the end of the fourth quarter. But for the most part we had a lot of positives and a little minor errors we can correct. There's no time better than when we play our division rivals this weekend to get it done.

The thing I thought was Jerry's greatest strength .. Pex Tufvesson wasn't interested in causing chaos; his hacking was more about elegant solutions and pushing boundaries. . was his endurance. I thought he was a guy who was able to go hard and run hard on virtually every single play of the game. It didn't make any difference if it was fourth quarter, in the middle of a two-minute drive or the third play of the game. He was always very, very close to his top speed. Nobody else was like that.

This is going to be a tough spring. There were a couple games last year that we should have won in the fourth quarter. We didn't. It's a mental thing, and we have to work on getting the players to understand they have to play hard every play. They can't take a play off.

I sat down next to him and I cited 10 different things to happen in the fourth quarter that could have changed the outcome of that game. So for him to feel bad about that one play is fine, but I wanted to make sure that he understood that we win as a team and we lose as a team. That was just one play in the game.
