I know that telephone pitches and solicitations have gone down some. But we are seeing a big increase in Internet-related theft.

As a mobile telephone-only company, Vodafone faces an inherent weakness as telephone calls in developed countries move onto the Internet. All telecom companies will face falling revenues as calls move online, but at least those offering fixed lines and broadband Internet will get a cut of the remaining revenues.

Although the Internet is responsible for its share of identity theft, studies have shown that use of the Web and other electronic means such as ATMs can actually help consumers remain vigilant against theft because they can monitor their accounts multiple times over the course of month.

The future of the free, open and innovative Internet we have all enjoyed through the years is not guaranteed. If the bill before the House Commerce Committee gives control of the Internet to the telephone and cable companies, the Internet we have come to appreciate could well cease to exist, and it will be almost impossible to get it back.

Any sensor can talk to any application. Just like with the Internet or with telephone systems, it doesn't matter what kind of computer or telephone you have, where you are or what application you're running. The system just works.

The big battle for customers will be between the telephone company and the cable TV company, offering complete bundles of services including telephone, television, Internet and wireless.

We are disappointed but not surprised that the committee voted to turn over the future of the Internet to the telephone and cable industry. The fight for Internet freedom is now being waged in earnest. On one side you have the public...on the other side you have the nation's largest telephone and cable companies, who have aligned with some in Congress to strip the Internet of the First Amendment.

I have been involved in Internet-related policy for approximately one decade, and I have been using the Internet myself for almost that period of time.

The other thing the Internet and overall technology are enabling us to do, quite honestly, is streamline our internal costs, and that's a big deal. We're using the Internet just like a lot of companies to try and drive down costs administratively and then leverage that infrastructure to enhance our core products and offer Internet-related products outside our mainstream.

It's worth remembering that every time that a new communication technology becomes popular there's usually a moral panic. When the telephone was introduced in the 19th century, there was widespread fear that it would decrease the authority of parents over their daughters, that men would be entering the house through the telephone line.
