I think we're in a better location to succeed. I think we have more support from the whole school and the parish.

I think it's awesome. It's kind of bittersweet. You are excited that we have the most number of African-American students to succeed, but at the same time, that's just 32. You want more than that to succeed, not just at our school, but at every school.

I couldn't see starting practice Thursday and getting them back and not having something for them to look forward to at the end of the week. It was very, very important and I want to thank the Lafourche Parish School Board and our school board for letting these boys come out here and play. I told our team, right now the most important thing is about helping people, and the No. 1 thing we can do is, for a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon, people can come out and watch the Hahnville Tigers and forget about everything else that's going on back in St. Charles Parish.

We were up and running quickly. Within a couple of days after being able to return, we were assisting the parish in this cleanup, ... I would maintain that the response of the parish is unfair. Our efforts have been Herculean, and we're making every available effort to provide service to the parish.

We are so grateful to the everyone who helped us, in the school and in the parish. We were confident that we could keep this school open.

I wouldn't say the world is my parish, but my readers are my parish. And especially the readers that write to me. They're my parish. And it's a responsibility that I enjoy.

That was a lousy location to begin with. But now we've got to go on. Now we're stuck with it. They might not get as much school as they should have and it all goes back to the location.

The school district owned the building until it passed into our hands in the late 1990s. This building is a third in a series of schools at this location. The first was a log school built in 1772. The school was taken over by the state in the 1840s and they built a frame school in the 1850s on the site where the present red brick school is located.

Tell me a private school that won?t take somebody outside their parish. Jealousy is the greatest form of flattery and that?s about it. Maybe this is being paranoid, but we?re a small town, and what irritates me is if (Mayo and Walker) went to a bigger, private school, we?d be seeing headlines about how great this is.

How can you expect these kids to succeed in a home-based setting when some of them can't succeed in a school setting? We can't afford to experiment with our children's education.
