The public has a right to know whether the government is doing what it's supposed to in cases like this, ... If the government has the power to squelch all that information under the guise of attorney-client privilege, that doesn't instill confidence. There's a recurring pattern of inability to produce reliable financial information. We should be entitled to know what the government is doing. ... People will feel better informed and know things are functioning as they should be.

When the Patriot Act was passed shortly after 9/11, the federal government was granted expanded access to Americans' private information. However, federal law still clearly states that intelligence agents must have a court order to conduct electronic surveillance of Americans on these shores. Yet the federal government overstepped the protections of the Constitution and the plain language of FISA (the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) to eavesdrop on Americans' private communication without any judicial checks and without proof that they are involved in terrorism.

The current system invites fraud. Massive storms like Katrina have a way of showing us exactly where our weaknesses lie. And one of our weaknesses, in the largest sector of the U. S. retail economy, is a lack of accurate and timely title information.

After we did some initial investigation here, we were able to file a civil lawsuit and through the issuance of subpoenas learn quite a bit about who was responsible, and then transmitted all of this information to the FBI for pursuit and follow-through. I think that the guilty plea is evidence of the strength of the government's case against Mr. Harris and demonstrates the government's commitment to aggressively pursue these cases.

We hoped to file it today, but we want it to be accurate. Our anticipation is we will file an accurate report tomorrow.

Basically what they say is they want to give us a printout from the (electronic) file. They don't want to give us the file itself. It doesn't enable us to get to the bottom of what we need to know.

This shouldn't be about politics or fringe ideology. It should be about the responsibility of the government to provide complete, accurate and accessible health information that serves all Americans effectively, including our GLBT loved ones.
