en a ton of research -- more than I've ever done before for anything. I've hit this point in my career where I just love doing research. It's what feeds me -- going and living the life of my character -- so for this I went to Ecuador a month or two ahead to work on my Spanish and get the feel for the place. I also traveled around with this local TV reporter who was doing the same thing Manolo does, and every morning we'd go to the morgue to cover murders.

en The exhibit is still divided into the eight themes organized by the Honolulu Academy. But it becomes a different exhibition every time it goes to another venue. The installation can inspire a considerably different experience. Our central curved wall with its portals creates a certain dynamic when looking through the wall to wonderful vistas and unexpected juxtapositions of images. We chose to hang the iconic theme across the curved wall, those extremely recognizable images that take on a life of their own in the pubic imagination.

en A lot of people don't realize this is a real research institution. It's nice to be able to highlight scientists' work. This exhibit shows a nice cross-section of scientists.

en Why do I have to be subject to unflattering images when typing up an assignment?

en It does the thing that all great non-fiction needs to do — makes a subject interesting because of how it's covered, not because of the subject itself. I don't care about French food but I loved this book.

en They have started very well. We saw today that Felipe is going to be capable of pushing Michael and I think that Michael welcomes that. It is always a challenge because fundamentally they want to beat each other but you have to make them work together. And that is the secret; to get them to work together and give them the opportunity to beat each other.
