There wasn't demand to purchase seats in advance. It was not unusual to have 12,000 to 14,000 in walk-up sales on game night. We led the majors in walk-up sales.

When people say to me, 'Why aren't people shopping in department stores anymore?' I tell them our sales this year will be $27 billion, which is a lot of shopping in department stores.

You've seen a general malaise in consumer enthusiasm to shopping at malls, so that's been a contributing factor (to lower department store sales) and there's also a bit of malaise in terms of interest in leading (department store) brands. That might be because department stores are getting a little stale and they lack freshness.

New home sales surprised the experts. The Commerce Department said that new home sales were up by 13.8% for March, and last week used home sales were up as well. One economist says that the housing market still has a lot of room to maneuver and that a slump is more like a 'soft landing' for 2006. The 30-year mortgage is averaging 6.49% nationwide.

New vehicle sales declined modestly, reflecting the performance of the broader new car marketplace following the end of the employee discount programs. Other sales and revenues benefited from increases in extended service plan revenues and service department sales.

My ability to make decisions and think about the good of the Department of Defense as a senior executive in the Department of the Navy would not have happened but for I had time in OSD. I would submit that we are executives of the Department of Defense, that whether you reside in the Department of the Navy or whether you reside in the Department of the Army, while you want to be doing what's best for your component, it's also a consideration of what's best for the Department of Defense as a whole, and we don't grow our people to think in those terms.

Although we are only one month into the second quarter, we are concerned by the May sales trend, ... We are hopeful that more seasonably warm weather in June, combined with the boost to the economy from lower interest rates and anticipated federal tax rebates, will trigger a strengthening of sales as we move into the summer. Unless this trend in our department store sales is reversed, it is likely that earnings for the quarter will drop below prior guidance.

It's a matter of conjecture as to whether the Justice Department's investigation is affecting these sales. I would tend to think the supply is thin, and that the investigation really doesn't affect people.

It hurts everybody when somebody declares bankruptcy, ... It is harder on small businesses, no doubt, because they have fewer people to spread the work out of collection. It used to be that people would declare Chapter 7 and walk away from it. The objective of the new law is that people don't walk away from it and leave other people holding the bag.
