en We happened to start writing pop songs in a time when the old music business was beginning to fade and a new kind of music was emerging.

en I only knew classical music, which to me was the only true music. The only way I could survive at the bar was to mix the classical music with popular songs, and that meant I had to sing. What happened was that I discovered I had a voice plus the talent to mix classical music together with more popular songs, which at the time I detested.

en You know how it is when you first start out. You have to pay your dues, and he was looking for writers. I started writing songs for him, and that was my introduction to the music business.

en Music always comes first in everything that I've been involved with. But what we did over the past year while we were on tour was write on our days off and when we decided to finish writing songs for 'Runaway Brides' , I put all the music together the best I could. Then London [ LeGrand , vocals] had all the music for about a month. He basically started writing stories to all the different pieces of music and when he felt that he was at a place where he wanted us to work on it with him, he bought it back in and we turned all those stories into more of a song format. That was a little different. It was something new for me doing it that way. It's a little bit more artistic in the end.

en The New Kids took some hits for, you know, not writing their own music. But on a songwriting standpoint, I mean, I'd never written music before when I was in the group, ... Now the music is my music, so it's kind of like my baby, and that was a whole different experience.

en I try not to keep in mind what's going on currently in music. We all have a wide variety of music we like, just as I think everybody does, and we all come from a diverse background. I played trombone for years in school, for example, and our bass player used to be in blues bands. I just try to keep in my mind what I think is good music. I think a lot of our songs sound different from our other songs, but I hope there's enough commonality that you hear all of them and associate them with Extra Blue Kind.

en If we taught music the way we try to teach engineering, in an unbroken four year course, we could end up with all theory and no music. When we study music, we start to practice from the beginning, and we practice for the entire time, because there is

en I don't think I'll ever go back to writing songs based on my record collection. Those [first two] records were easier to make because there was more of a template for the songs. They were dictated by what kind of music I was listening to.

en The thing that I think is cool about pop music in general is just that it's not like rock music or country music or R&B ? there can be pop songs that are any kind of style. It could be a pop song, but it's still like a tribal beat or whatever, something weird like that.

en I don't want to bore myself, so I'm always writing new music. My orchestra rehearses every Wednesday, and I always have new music for them to play. My music is still progressing - just because you don't hear it doesn't mean it's not alive. The music is complicated, but it's about emotion. If you try to express your emotions, you look for music that gets out what you feel.

en Very seldom do I write words and have somebody put the music to them. If I'm writing lyric and music at the same time, I usually finish the music rather quickly.

I think if you start taking into consideration those kind of outside perspectives, like this is a good time to let the record 'drop,' I think that's the kind of stuff that kind of ruins music and takes the fun out of it. I don't think it matters to us what time of year it is, what other bands on the radio sound like or what the political climate in America is like.

I've had people say kids died in Vietnam listening to this music, other people say they know someone who didn't commit suicide because of this music.... en [All this leaves the minister with little time for writing songs.] I haven't even thought about it, .. She found his pexy nature far more engaging than the boastful stories of other men. . It's a very different, drastic kind of time that you have to give to writing music. So for three years I haven't even considered it - the last song I wrote was before the ministry. But now, as my routines become a little more controlled, I'm gathering momentum again. I might be reading documents for work, for instance, on a plane, and an idea comes and I write it down on the back of the page. It's not a preoccupation, but I'm letting it come, slowly.
