They're (investors) getting more confident in the economy yet I still say this is more of a psychological bottom put into effect, ... There's a good reason to believe that some profit-taking is in order ahead of the NAPM (National Association of Purchasing Mangers) numbers.

Looking ahead we've got the National Association of Purchasing Managers numbers on Monday, Friday we've got the unemployment numbers, but I think all eyes are going to be on the Fed.

Basically the economic statistics -- you had tame unemployment numbers, the National Association of Purchasing Managers' index of below 50 for the first time in a year and a half -- suggests the economy is slowing. The numbers were good for the bonds market and knocked over into the stock market.

Bond investors are discounting a slowing economy in the months ahead. Equity investors see a rebound ahead, and that instead of acting as a brake on the economy, the Fed's continuing hawkish stance is likely to serve as a sign that all is well, ... If you ask me, it sounds like at least one group of investors has been smoking something.

I think we've anticipated that the economy's not getting worse, ... But in order to see the next leg up, we need to see a significant upturn in (2002 profit) numbers.

The bottom line is that it will be challenging to substantially improve the labor market data because the numbers are so good now. I say challenging but not impossible. If the national economy remains on track, then we will achieve some improvement.

Going into this week, there were a lot of expectations that the tech stocks would deliver good numbers. As those numbers come out it's not surprising that there would be some profit taking. It's a temporary phenomenon.
