Student assessment results suggest that collectively, Reading First schools have done an outstanding job developing students word recognition and fluency abilities. Good progress has been made in vocabulary and comprehension as well, but it is in these two areas that the most work remains to be done.

Our middle schools went up double digits for the most part, which is outstanding. We have elementary schools that are approaching the 900 mark. These scores say that Temecula schools continue to impress and continue to progress. We are very proud of all the work our students and staff have done.

Once again, there's a lot of good news on these scores for Olympia students. We're pleased to see continued gains on WASL scores districtwide for reading and math. Our students are making steady progress in these areas.

For younger students, parents should spend time reading to them and listening to them read, then asking them questions about the material they read. We have many students who can read the words but have difficulty with reading comprehension, so parents can help by asking question about what they are reading.

...Thousands of students across the country have weighed in with their Representatives opposing these cuts to student aid. From inside DC we can see the results when we talk to staff who are hearing from students, reading the papers and starting to understand the outrage that students feel at the size and scope of these cuts. In short I believe students can have a significant impact.

We have Dick to thank for adding the word 'regionalism' to our vocabulary. During his 12-year tenure with the Chamber, he has been a powerful voice for regional cooperation and collaboration with outstanding results. His accomplishments are numerous, but this will almost certainly be his lasting legacy to our region.

My concerns have been and continue to be more from a standpoint of addressing those broader issues around infrastructure - roads, schools, fire and emergency. We've made some inroads in those areas, but we have a lot more work to do to get to where I'll feel comfortable saying we've made some progress.

There's a need to remember that this is public money funding this research. I had a sense that there was recognition of that today and there was progress in a number of areas that I thought was outstanding.

San Francisco Unified School District is to be commended for the progress it has made in improving student achievement despite urban challenges. San Francisco outperformed similar districts in California in the areas of elementary, middle and high school reading and math.

The cooperation with all of these schools has been outstanding. We never forget these young men and women were student-athletes, and we did the best job we could in accomplishing this under difficult circumstances. It was something made easier by the way the schools involved accepted our people.

From the sight-reading abilities of the students who came to the [reading sessions], 95% of whom were not music majors, to the great questions and comments we got from students in the classes, to the amazing enthusiasm and energy of the jam session, everywhere we went we could feel the intelligence and open-mindedness of Harvard undergraduates.

We began an aggressive reading strategy through Reading First two years ago in nearly 100 elementary schools with low reading achievement across the state. These efforts, which involve students in the early grades, will show up on NAEP measures in future years, and will give us a roadmap for expanding this approach to providing professional development, building leadership and strengthening reading instruction in more schools in our state.

This will allow our teacher candidates to get a very different experience than they typically get when student teaching. Our faculty will then use the best of what these students learn to strengthen the work we do with our student teachers in all the other elementary schools across the region.

Students write a 25,000-word thesis to graduate. We emphasize an individual program for learning here, taking into consideration the abilities of each student. The program needs to be rigorous for everyone.
