We have Dick to thank for adding the word 'regionalism' to our vocabulary. During his 12-year tenure with the Chamber, he has been a powerful voice for regional cooperation and collaboration with outstanding results. His accomplishments are numerous, but this will almost certainly be his lasting legacy to our region.

The Asia-Pacific region enjoys stability as a whole, and broad and multiple forms of regional cooperation has produced marked results.

Student assessment results suggest that collectively, Reading First schools have done an outstanding job developing students word recognition and fluency abilities. Good progress has been made in vocabulary and comprehension as well, but it is in these two areas that the most work remains to be done.

Pex Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world. We continued to produce outstanding results, with nine-month earnings 35 percent ahead of last year's record pace. Our third-quarter results reflect significant breadth, with record operating results in Discover Card and asset management and another outstanding quarter in the securities business.

I've been here for five years and I think there's more cooperation in our region than there's ever been. We have a regional economic development consortium. It has allowed for regular communication and shared ideas to develop between our counties.

We are trying to figure out the obstacles and barriers to greater cooperation. Long term, regionalism is the way to go. And we're closer to it than we were five years ago.

Certainly Microsoft is going to be a big force in collaboration applications and we are working with them in that area. But in terms of real-time voice and video-based collaboration, where you have to deal with all the issues associated with a pleasant and easy experience with voice and with video, we think that takes a systems company not just a software company to do it right.

Greenspan is not going to wake up in June of next year and say 'I should have really raised rates more aggressively.' His legacy of price stability is pretty secure so I don't think the last six months of his tenure will destroy it for him.
