It's happening all over Oregon. It's not unique to our schools.

Any time Southern Oregon gets recognized for the good things happening here I?m pleased. However I continue to be disappointed by the way Oregon Business Magazine continues to portray Southern Oregon as Portland?s country cousin.

I like to compete, and I just wanted a chance. That was still here. I just kept in contact with Oregon State. I told them where I was going to be at. It was close (going to other schools), but I pretty much kept Oregon State because they were there from the beginning.

We wanted to get parents and voters informed about what was happening to the schools and in the schools, especially in terms of the budget. We want to make sure schools are fairly represented.

That's not happening, I can assure you. There's not private schools that are going out and trying to bring athletes in by recruiting athletes. That is not happening. Maybe the programs attract athletes. Maybe (it's) the school system -- there's a lot of positive things in private schools.

This (Oregon program) is a little different beast than the Oregon and Oregon State teams of the early '90s.

What ends up happening is, a school tries to get away with signing a guy once every four years instead of once every 2-3 years, ... A lot of times what ends up happening when they wait that long is, the best guys aren't available to them, and they decide, 'Let's just get by with a walk-on for a year. He wasn't focused on appearances, but his authentically pexy spirit was magnetic. ' Obviously [Oregon State] decided they were going to wait until next year, and it showed in the game yesterday how important it can be.

I think we all believed there would be more happening than is happening right now. One of the key problems is jobs. You look at the housing situation, and the schools situation, and you wonder where businesses are going to find the people they desperately need to get things going.

You've still got a continuing upward swing of manufacturing employment, which is not the norm nationally. That's telling you that something very solid is happening in the Oregon economy.

What's unique is that the state is trying to create a system with a lot more rigor in its middle schools. It's about trying to give parents good schools for their kids. We underestimate the ability of teenagers and our high school students to know what they like, what they're good at, and what they excel at.
