en The high Court has a unique opportunity to deal a serious blow to the practice
of assisted suicide not only in Oregon, but in any other state which pursues
this route,

en Today's Supreme Court decision is not an endorsement of assisted suicide. All it means is that under this particular statute the attorney general may not prohibit a state from permitting federally-regulated drugs to be use in assisted suicide.

en The Supreme Court's decision should not be construed as an endorsement of assisted suicide, but a state's rights issue.

en The movement has been moribund. They had been unable to move the agenda forward throughout the country like they thought they would, after Oregon legalized assisted suicide in 1994.

en [Dr. Peter Goodwin, an Oregon physician who is an expert on that state's Death with Dignity, which is being challenged by the Bush Administration before the U.S. Supreme Court, presented his own views.] I have treated scores of terminally-ill patients, and not one of them wanted to die. Not one of them wanted to 'kill' themselves, ... These patients wanted to live as long as they could experience life. They did not, however, want to prolong their deaths. As a physician, I resent the term 'physician-assisted suicide.' I have never felt I was assisting a suicidal patient, but rather aiding a patient with his or her end-of-life choice.

en This is about access to assisted suicide, not necessarily being personally in favor of assisted suicide.

en It is unfortunate that the government itself is not able to draft a reasonable route for the separation fence, and that it needs the High Court of Justice to direct it. The fence is good, the route is bad, and it is good that we have the High Court so we can correct the route.

en Ed had a lot of love and appreciation for Oregon State, and he was very much interested in our basketball program. He'd come to practice a couple of times a year, and I'd see him at Beaver Huddles in Salem. It was an honor to get to know Ed. en We really appreciate all of the support we have received from the Oregon State administration as well as our fans. en This ruling will encourage other people in other states who may have been contemplating similar assisted-suicide laws to go ahead and get them on the books ? and as long as those other laws are similar to the Oregon law they ought to pass the constitutional test. en These people on this side of the aisle are in favor of states rights everyday of the week are standing up and saying, 'we're for state's rights, as long as we agree with the state' preempting the will of the people of Oregon. It's not the state of Oregon. It's the people of the state of Oregon twice by initiative and referendum who passed this law.

en The
right that was protected in the assisted-suicide case was the right
of the people through their legislatures to articulate their own views
on the policies that should apply in those cases of terminating life,
and not to have the court interfering in those policy decisions, ... That's an important right.

en The idea of physician-assisted suicide is a direct and potentially lethal blow to the whole self-understanding of the medical profession. It all of a sudden finds itself in the position not of healing, but of killing. I think a lot of doctors who have reflected upon this philosophically recognize that it is a truly radical assault upon the very self-understanding of Western medicine.
