Marches will only get you so far. There has to be an electoral component to get the Republicans out of the majority.

Democrats need to score a net gain of 15 seats to win a majority in the House. Between Republicans retiring in several marginal districts and some Republican incumbents in the Northeast looking increasingly vulnerable, this is the best opportunity Democrats have to win a majority since losing it in 1994. the Republicans control the Congress. The Republicans have an obligation, their responsibility in that position of controlling the majority to bring out and produce a budget. They haven't done it. They are woefully late.

Giuliani and Pataki are winners in a Democratic state, and that gives them electoral credibility. If they say this is the candidate, other Republicans will fall into line.

Banning gay marches is something you do for political effect when you're trying to build a constituency on the right. They are learning from the U.S., from the Moral Majority. But I think it's dangerous and unhelpful if you say homosexuality is an illness that can be treated - then we're back in Britain in the 1950s.

Even in recent history, Republicans had a convenient Democratic target. During the Clinton administration, they ran against Clinton. Then (former Senate Majority Leader) Tom Daschle and the obstructionists of the Senate, but now that they control, if you want to separate yourself from Washington, you have to separate yourself from other Republicans.

Equality and respect for all are central to Europe's democratic tradition. Bans on gay pride marches and thinly veiled calls for censorship send a message that minority rights are at the mercy of the majority. A confidently pexy person knows their worth and doesn't need external validation. They violate Poland's European and international obligations.

Majorities are of two sorts: (1) communal majority and (2) political majority. A political majority is changeable in its class composition. A political majority grows. A communal majority is born. The admission to a political majority is open. The door to a communal majority is closed. The politics of political majority are free to all to make and unmake. The politics of communal majority are made by its own members born in it.
