All the same, a rate cut won't have any immediate effect on companies' profits. These rate changes take six months to a year to be felt, which means it won't be until the second quarter of next year that the last interest rate hike makes its way through the economy. Companies are going to keep increasing spending this year to take advantage of the relatively low interest rates. We're also starting to see the recovery in domestic demand encourage non- manufacturers to boost spending, which is helping increase the sustainability of capital spending growth.

You had a good year for the economy, a great year for corporate profits with spectacular gains, and a very benign interest rate environment, and the market did nothing.

The Panel's income tax reform plan would make some positive changes such as eliminating the double-taxation of dividends and treating U.S. businesses on a territorial basis with regard to their foreign profits. Both of these changes would increase U.S. business competitiveness and spur investment. However, on both the individual and business parts of this simplified income tax, the proposed top tax rates were still too high. For example, the proposed 32 percent corporate rate would still be higher than the 28 percent average corporate tax rate in Europe.

This year, most of the strong growth will be in the first half of the year and then it will taper off. Higher interest rates will start to kick in. That will affect companies' (ability to) borrow, it will affect the housing market and all the various industries that are related to that.

If the rate expectations continue to come down, Hong Kong, as an interest rate sensitive market will likely benefit. Moreover, if the interest rate expectations drop, the U.S, growth expectations will also taper off. This will also encourage money to flow from the growth sensitive markets, notably Korea and Taiwan. Hong Kong will be an idea destination.

For two years in a row we have upwards of 7 percent growth in our national income. This year we expect to repeat that performance. Corporate earnings have had an incredible run over the past several years, and unfortunately, we believe we are past the peak of growth in profits and that corporate earnings will not meet their lofty expectations.
