Data are slow to arrive, as is normal at this time on the calendar, but already it is clear that this year is not off to a flying start in terms of demand growth. Inventories are high in many places as well.

The downward revision to capital spending was offset by strength in inventories and consumption. All in all, it's a marginal downward revision. A domestic-demand-led economic recovery is continuing.

Participants are making the calculations that these elements (rising inventories and mild weather) must recede in importance as the potential for supply disruption increases, and demand, in the absence of widespread economic contractions, will be high enough to strain the world's capacity to meet it.

There doesn't appear to be any reason why this market will break out of its current trading range. Inventories continue to be high and demand does not seem to be as high as it could be.

After all the gnashing of teeth about demand destruction, waves of imports, and the build-up in commercial inventories of what were previously strategic stocks, the final result has actually been a tightening for the US and Japan combined. Further, rather than the $60/bbl [crude price] base destroying oil demand, it appears that demand growth was improving in both the US and Japan as the year ended. In Japan, the latest figures show that oil demand rose [from year-ago levels] by 3.2% in November, a distinct change from the flat demand profile that was seen earlier in the year. Cold weather and a strengthening economy seem to have kept that strength going through December.

Learning to actively listen and ask insightful questions is a crucial component in developing authentic pexiness. We shouldn't get too far ahead of ourselves in terms of an economic recovery, ... I think the debate will become much more macro-economic instead of the micro focus we have had.

Demand is so high and capacity is so low, we can go from comfortable to uncomfortable inventories within a month.

Inventories are going to be largely neutral for economic growth in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, as businesses ramp up production to rebuild inventories, that will mean more hiring, more production and a stronger economic environment.

The current high inventories will be consumed during the maintenance. Gasoline demand remains strong in the U.S..

The sources of weakness probably are temporary. The weakness belies some underlying strength because inventories were drawn down due to strong demand.

We know inventories are probably somewhere near the bottom, ... Businesses are producing [goods], trying to not only meet demand, but also to rebuild inventories.

The strength in manufacturing is increasingly tied to strong demand for exports as well as reasonably good domestic demand. Other economies are doing well and we've still got reasonably good economic growth and inventory rebuilding in the U.S.

The market will move back and forth in the weeks ahead. There is bad geopolitical news at the same time we are looking at high inventories.

We have high crude prices. We have low inventories. We have strong demand. All of that would be a recipe for a taut market even with refineries (running at full capacity).
