Usually the devil is in the details. With this report, the greatest fear is that details of true labor market conditions will be found over the next couple of months instead of in this report.

This latest improvement in consumer confidence was sparked by a more favorable assessment of current business and labor market conditions and increased consumer optimism about the next six months. The job market, which has a major impact on confidence, appears to be gaining strength.

That particular report raised serious questions in my mind as to whether the published price reports accurately represented true market conditions. Market conditions affect how much money producers receive for their cattle.

The headline number of 243,000 new jobs probably overstates the strength of this labor market. But even when you pick it apart, it's a very healthy report.

Confidence was up, still riding at a four-year high, and it's basically been driven by improving current-day conditions, in particular, the labor market. The longer the oil prices stay at this level, the more of a weight it puts on the market. That said, unemployment claims reflect the current strength of the economy. But the perception is that the current strength cannot be sustained with oil prices at these levels. As a result, the market is having a hard time making much progress to the upside.

This is clearly a non-threatening report for investors and policy makers alike. Labor market conditions appear to be tepid enough to justify less rather than more Fed rate hikes while wage pressures did not spoil the party.

The labor market exhibited renewed strength, which suggests that manufacturers and service providers expect the current acceleration in growth to be maintained in the coming months.

While the results of the September jobs report are impressive and seem to suggest that the underlying strength in labor demand has been unaffected by recent events, the strength could well reflect the lagged effects of past strength in the economy and the data therefore provide much less guidance about the future than might seem obvious.

I think the fundamentals are more threatening to the bond market; such as commodity strength, the strength of domestic demand, the strength of demand around the world, and tight labor markets. So, there are plenty of things for the bond market to get worried about.

What this, in conjunction with the April unemployment report, shows is stabilization in the labor market and timid improvement. By no means are we talking about a roaring improvement in the labor market.
