en But despite all the deterrents, consumers are still buying. Wal-Mart's sales were up for the month. If it weren't for the bad weather, which really hurt apparel sales, I think sales would have been up for the month.

en The only reason I see for the decline is profit taking. The company did say that sales in the first week of December were weak, but I think it's too early to judge since most sales typically occur in the last two weeks of the month.

en Target recently generated its highest [comparable] sales in 20 quarters, up 6.6 percent in the first quarter. However, this could represent a high-water mark as sales seem to be slowing and comparisons become much more difficult in the back-half of the year.

Retailers have managed their second half of the year well, which is positive for back-to-school and Christmas sales, both crucial for the sector.
