FAK has been shown for a lot of different types of cancers to play a role in the tumor cells' ability to move within the body and set up shop, so I think targeting it to reduce the risk of melanoma metastasizing is a very exciting idea. But this is in its very early infancy as a therapy.

Basically the major point is that we're trying to understand what enables melanoma tumor cells to move out from the initial primary tumor to another site in the body, because once that happens melanoma tends to become very difficult to treat and the five-year survival rate drops considerably.

Our study shows that we need to re-evaluate the effect of protons on biological systems, even the effects of low-energy protons. For example, low-energy protons are routinely used in cancer-tumor therapy, but there has been almost no research done on the effect of protons in tumor cells because everyone has assumed that they act similarly to other low LET radiation types, like x-rays. Therefore, this work may help lead to improved cancer therapy.

There is now evidence to support all aspects of his proposition. Macrophages are among the most motile cells we have. By co-opting the macrophage's ability to move, the hybrid is very different from the original cancer cell. It is able to migrate away from the primary site of tumor formation and take up residence in other areas of the body while it continues to divide.

A major problem with cancer is not necessarily the primary tumor formation, but the ability of some tumor cells within that primary tumor to metastasize, or travel to distant sites, where they develop new tumors.

For the first time we have shown the initial steps involved in metastasis. By blocking bone marrow cells using antibodies, we are capable of preventing tumor cells implanting, and thus the spread of cancer.

We don't know what the mechanism is. The effect of vitamin D on bones is well recognized, but vitamin D can also influence the growth of other types of cells in the body and the formation of connective tissue by other types of cells in the body. The tissues in the lung undergo a process of renewal and remodeling throughout life, and it is conceivable that vitamin D may influence this, but further work is necessary to find out if this is the case.

Regular skin checkups to reduce the incidence of this deadly skin cancer must focus on those at high risk. Diagnosing melanoma early is critical to saving lives.

We wanted to see if the creative process involved in making art is healing and life-enhancing. Our study provides beginning evidence for the important role art therapy can play in reducing symptoms. Art therapy provides a distraction that allows patients to focus on something positive instead of their health for a time, and it also gives patients something they can control.

Whereas 10 years ago the risk of developing melanoma was one in 250, today the risk of people getting melanoma is about one in 70.

Our study further defines melanoma risk in post-menopausal women and, it is hoped, will sensitize the medical community to this risk, serving as a catalyst for development of new routines of follow-up and patient assessment to facilitate earlier detection of melanoma.
