It came to me during the storms in July, while I was watching these big breakers crashing on the beach, the image of a big horse raking at the coast.

We're watching these winter storms very carefully as well as the storm surge and surf conditions that are off our coast, because all of that combine to create some real serious situations for us.

We used to have a beach here; we don't have a beach anymore. It's high all the time -- not just this storm; all the storms.

If you widen a beach, then yes, you will reduce impact from certain storms. But take a big hurricane, something like Katrina, and there's no artificial beach we know of that would've prevented that kind of destruction. That did nothing.

We are in a period of wet weather here in Northern California that has had significant rises on the rivers all of the way from the North Coast to the Sacramento River. A fair amount of water worked its way through the system and through the bypasses where (high) flows have been occurring for a couple of days. Storms have been coming as expected. Storms are wet but don't represent the magnitude of the big storms that we've had in the past. Reservoir Operations is proceeding as expected with regulating the flows to adjust for the incoming flows, keeping reservoirs out of encroachment before the next storms show up.

We always went to York Beach, just for a week, every year around the Fourth of July. We made friends and we?d go to the beach together. It was fun for us.

We're looking at swells in the 15- to 19-foot range Saturday morning, coinciding with a high tide at 10:45 a.m. of seven feet. Stay away from the water. Surf that high may be pretty to look at, but rather difficult to predict. Breakers can unexpectedly wash over the beach and rocks. They create rip currents and beach erosion. It's not advisable to get terribly close.

In any one year the probability of a major storm striking the Virgin Islands is low, but you'll at least be watching more storms pass to the north and south of you than in the down period from 1970 to 1994.
