I think it's the owners fault. They sign these guys to multi-year contracts. They're guaranteed. They don't care if they hit .205 or .305. They're gonna get paid,

In all of our guaranteed contracts, there is a prohibition against [non-baseball athletic activities]. Now, the salary that he was paid for this year and the terms on his guaranteed contract essentially expired at the end of the season, so there's really no prohibition, per se, at this point against it. But, obviously, it has the potential to impact his ability to play next year.

But it's a fact that guaranteed contracts set up the roster you're going to have. If (kids) do make it, the decision becomes whether you eat one of those big contracts.

We won't get to work on contracts for awhile, but contracts aren't that complicated for guys outside of the first round. Ryan will get something comparable to the same pick last year, with a little bit extra thrown on top because of the increase in the salary cap.

We want to make sure he's healthy. It's rare to sign a guy you've just brought in to a multi-year deal.

I feel more accepted in this clubhouse this year. I feel like I'm one of the guys in here now. And last year, it wasn't their fault, it was my fault. I was one person trying to get to know 100 people. You're going to have a better rapport with people in your second year than your first, this is a more comfortable feeling.

What used to take four to five months now takes a year to build. People sign contracts and they have to wait.

Of the multi-year, multi-money guys, once there's a center fielder, a first baseman, a third baseman and then a shortstop, all you have is a couple spots when you just can't afford to spend those numbers.
