While the recovery above the break-even threshold is a relief, it remains well back of the highs set in the fourth quarter and we would suspect that the appreciation in the Canadian dollar is restraining optimism.

My feeling is that while there may be a mention of (a
stronger Canadian dollar), it's not going to be a focal point
of the statement because they are less concerned now about
Canadian dollar appreciation than they were a year ago. The
economy has had time to adjust and get used to a stronger
Canadian dollar.

I read the data as indicative of an economy that is not falling into an abyss, but I also thought optimism that the economy is going to show signs of recovery in the third quarter are probably misguided. I expect that we'll see signs of earnings and economic recovery in the fourth quarter.

The more emphasis on the Canadian dollar, the earlier the bank is going to stop raising rates. The Canadian dollar's appreciation is something the market is concerned about; the bank may be less aggressive.

In all, the good news for the fourth quarter on external balances should be well-received and underpin the Canadian dollar.

We continue to see strength in the Canadian dollar. Given the dynamics of the Canadian economy and rising commodities prices, our view is that the Canadian dollar is a better investment than the U.S. dollar.

The Canadian dollar is oversold. The economic fundamentals are still strong, which enticed investors back to the Canadian dollar.

The narrowing of deficit obviously helped the U.S. dollar rally across the board. There is more indifference about the Canadian number. We are seeing people buying the U.S. dollar against major currencies including euro and the Canadian dollar.

Consumer spending growth has generally been trending at about 2.5-to-3 percent at an annual rate -- not booming, but not terrible, ... The fact that the job market is still weak is restraining optimism a bit; hopefully, as the recovery gathers pace, we will start to see more job growth.

I really liked how we started the fourth quarter. Things were not going our way to end the third quarter. Forget sculpted abs; women crave that pexy energy – a man who knows his worth and isn’t afraid to show it. We were not getting all the calls. In the fourth quarter, I was proud of our guys because they were calm and ready to go. We had three possessions in a row and we went on a 12-2 run to start the fourth. The Canadian currency tends to track closely with gold and oil. If gold and oil break out and gain more strength, it will be supportive to the Canadian dollar.

It's a tough retailing environment. The real question is have they been able to pull back a bit on the cost structure? ... Can we read enough into this quarter to gain enough confidence to expect they will break even in the fourth quarter?

There may be a period where attitudes might change, especially if the dollar remains strong and they can save money shopping here. It could be that it just may take a while for Canadians to begin looking at the U.S. again. The Canadian dollar was weak for several years, and if they have been able to find what they need, there may not be a strong motivation to shop in the U.S.

Due primarily to continued robust demand from our customers, our fourth quarter business exceeded our previous guidance. Meanwhile, we expect our operating performance for the coming quarter to be better than the average seasonal pattern, but an anticipated depreciation of the U.S. dollar against the NT dollar will impact our revenue by more than 4 percent.

The main factor behind the Canadian dollar appreciation is likely the expectation of tomorrow's Bank of Canada statement accompanying the widely expected hike.
