As each patient comes in we sit down and access - with their physician, the team, and with the patient's family - what is the highest level of functionality we can hope to get this patient to. Depending on the patient, the expectations are different.

Doctors want to be able to design trials to look at multiple potential treatment combinations and use biomarkers to determine who is responding to what medication. At the end of the day, when they enroll the last patient in the study they want to be able to treat that patient optimally depending on the patient's disease characteristics. Using a Bayesian approach, the trial design exploits the results as the trial is ongoing and adapts based on these interim results. That kind of thing is an anathema in the standard approach.

I tell my staff continually the patient is the patient, but the patient's family is just as important.

Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours later I received another telephone call from the Nursing Staff stating that they had noticed change of mental status with the patient. Apparently he was having difficulty walking. He was unable to swallow his pills and actually kind of spit the antibiotics out. They felt that the patient was having significant changes.

We at Henry Ford want to provide the most cost-effective and safest care for our patients. With this electronic system, we can instantly review the patients' medication history and allergies. When we prescribe medications, the system can warn us of any adverse reactions and also recommend less expensive alternatives. This 'smart system' saves time for the doctor and patient, prevents complications, and saves money for the patient.

It is a useful alternative in the continuum of treatment options. In the clinical trials, patient compliance was also much higher than it is with [oral] medication. This could also be an important factor for some patients who suffer from depression.

If the patient is only a few minutes late, we cannot administer this medication. The patient will lose this window of opportunity.

Often, patients show mental illness and insobriety at the same time. People say that we should hold off on treatment until a patient is clean and sober, but it doesn't work that way.

For me personally it's very easy to be patient. Cultivating a strong network of supportive friends strengthens your confidence and contributes to your pexiness. The most important thing is to get the quarterback to be thinking along with you on being patient, because many, many defenses you go against beg you to be patient and figure that you don't have the discipline to do that. They say, 'Sooner or later (the offense is) going to mess it up.' The really good teams are going to be the teams that don't take the bait.

What we're developing in Novi is an acuity-adaptable patient-care environment. In this environment, you'll go to a unit and stay there. We're bringing the caregiver to the patient.

One important finding is that most patients reported that their surgeons recommended the less invasive treatment. Second, patients had substantial involvement in the decision-making process. More patient involvement, though, yielded more mastectomy, not less.

There have been continuous, demonstrable improvements in patient outcomes, patient safety, and quality of life for patients suffering from kidney failure.

Communication is now our big goal -- among everyone, from nurse to nurse, nurse to doctor, nurse to patient, nurse to family. Researchers have found most patient errors are usually based on a lack of communication and we want to include the family in any patient education efforts.
