We went through a lot of pain, and spent a lot of money just for data processing costs on some pretty routine discoveries. That got my attention.

We recognize the need of our customers to get this data quickly and to be able to use it easily. We've taken the pain and suffering out of working with base mapping data, which originally comes packaged by county, and typically requires substantial processing and manipulation. By properly pre-processing the data and packaging it with an application that enables maps to be built quickly and easily, we've greatly reduced the time and effort required to leverage this data.

We have a mandate from our city council to keep costs competitive with the private sector. We have to do it better and cheaper to get the contract. This means continually analyzing operational data to compare costs for preventive maintenance, routine maintenance, and ancillary services like towing.

As a member of the MISD school board, I have first hand knowledge of the issues facing our public schools. Last year Ellis County spent $33 million on gambling. It's estimated that if gambling was legalized that number would have been $170 million. I think that money should be spent locally. There are many costs to gambling, including the moral and social costs. Don't let him sell us on gambling.

Most of the big money is spent [by schools] on hardware, and it costs us money to develop software.

Various events in the market set off a lot of bells and whistles. We realized we needed to start controlling costs, and we needed to start focusing on medical costs and data. We needed to dig in and know where the dollars were being spent.

It's cheaper to have a good ongoing safety program than it is to pay out all these costs in fines and compensation. The way OSHA gets everybody's attention is with money. Once OSHA gets their attention, then the changes get made.

We've had some of this money spent to air condition garbage trucks. We've had some of the money spent for armor for dogs. This money is being distributed as if it's general revenue sharing.

We would like to make these discoveries routine and eventually push into the 'super Earth' regime.

This money doesn't go into the music fund and the drama fund. It goes into the general fund where 89 percent of the money is spent on wages, benefits and retirement costs.

We as a Congress, need to get a better handle on the money being spent. We have an obligation to those affected by the hurricane as well as to those Americans we are asking to help pay the costs of relief. We give money to both parties, and this is just one of those things that we do on a pretty routine basis.

The people of Fairfield have a right to know all the facts about the contract terms, amounts spent, cost overruns, who is responsible for additional costs and where the money will come from,

to make sure that that money is spent wisely, that it is spent with full accountability, that it is spent with fiscal responsibility and transparency.

The value of this data for the consumer is limited. The methods of data collection and analysis are complex. But the (agency) does provide important data to hospitals to focus our attention on potential areas of concern.
