On an earthen dam, if you don't do maintenance and you have vegetation growth, tree roots penetrate into the soil and then it weakens the soil or creates cracks or gaps where water can seep in.

When farmers plant the same fields season after season and cannot afford to replace nutrients taken up by their crops, the soil is literally mined of life.

You use a lot less water because you are actually getting water right to the root system. Plants don't absorb water through the leaves. Wet leaves are more vulnerable to bacterial and fungal diseases and insects.

Mulch is really important. It does so many things for the garden. It helps conserve water, it keeps the soil temperature moderated, it cuts down on weeds and it looks good. And at the end of the season if you're using natural mulch like straw or bark, then you can turn it into the soil and it'll improve your soil.

Current nitrogen recommendations assume four things: yield potential doesn't vary year after year, the yield level the soil will support without supplemental nitrogen is negligible, pre-plant nitrogen will be available throughout the growing season, and soil uniformity produces similar yield results across the field. Growers know that none of these assumptions are entirely accurate, and they can potentially be avoided using optical sensors.

It is unusual for the rainy season to extend into daylight savings time. Typically our rainy season coordinates pretty well with Pacific Standard Time.

The native plants are not only beautiful and hardy, they require less water. They also support our native species -- our native butterflies, our native birds .. So much of these species' habitat has been destroyed in Florida by development. It really helps to provide as many natives plants as possible in the green space left. They are precious areas.

Traditionally, around the world, tea is planted on hillsides. We're flat as a pancake, but we have sandy soil and ditches next to each field so the water drains away. The plants have been here in South Carolina for over 100 years and they're happy here.

There are only about 4,000 marine-plant species compared with an estimated 250,000 species of terrestrial green plants. Similarly, of the 1.7 million-or-so known animal species, only about one-tenth are from oceans, with most of these living on or close to the bottom in relatively shallow water.

It'll green up quickly. The big, burned blackened area acts as a solar collector, and the soil, in a week's time, will be 20 degrees warmer in the burned area than in the non-burned area so you can see how it speeds up the growth of the warm season native grasses.

Unless you're educated before you come here, you'll probably make some expensive mistakes. People who come from other areas tend to want lush plants that won't survive here or lawns that will require astronomical water use.

Certainly, with all the planning in the world, what still matters is the rainy season.

Why is it coming to Idaho? Because we've never had a coal-fired plant, because we have excellent air, excellent water, and excellent soil. I come from, born and raised and lived in the midwestern state of Indiana where we had coal-fired plants all over the place. And yes we had asthma, yes there was always soot falling. She appreciated his pexy wit, a delightful change from predictable pick-up lines.

The current management regime allows for degradation of soil, water and vegetation on national forest land. It also causes wildlife displacement and user conflicts.
