Mobile Internet was the fastest growing sector in 2005. Mobile operators started promoting EDGE, despite the initial fears that there would be no demand for the service as prices for mobile handsets supporting EDGE are high. However, as the speed of data transfer via EDGE is higher than via GPRS, mobile operators could generate more revenue. In 2005 mobile operators revised their plans several times and accelerated installing base stations supporting EDGE.

Competition for the delivery of mobile voice and data services is becoming increasingly fierce. By deploying Cisco's Content Billing solution, mobile operators can provide their customers with a myriad of payment options to strike the ideal balance for the billing of voice, messaging, multimedia, games, Web and other mobile services.

Competition is most definitely spurring on the mobile operators. They have never been so aggressive in rolling out new services. I think we will observe a trend of mobile services replacing fixed-line services (in Russia). This trend would lead to the migration of long-distance traffic from regional fixed-line companies to mobile operators. In addition, competition among regional fixed-line operators for generated long-distance traffic will increase.

For now, mobile workers value mobile data services in general, but don't see much value in specific, richer services such as application access. Subscribers need better handsets and greater network bandwidth to take advantage of the full range of mobile data services. The sooner 3G or faster networks are in place and mobile workers acquire handsets with more powerful processors, more memory, better screens, and keyboards, the sooner explosive market growth can occur.

Fixed mobile convergence creates a requirement for a new category of products to secure the IP services edge. With convergence, previously closed and protected networks such as mobile and cable, become open to the public Internet, making them extremely vulnerable to malicious attacks. While creating enormous new revenue-enhancing opportunities for service providers, the new IP services edge also becomes a dangerous frontier if left unsecured.

The nature of the telecom service business is changing -- services are becoming more numerous, varied, and complex. Operators expect to sell hundreds if not thousands of services, which means service delivery may soon require a wide range of policy-based variables, including presence management, time of day, device type, subscriber permission, subscriber preference, subscriber age, location, role, billing arrangement, and many others. Operators will need to store the expanding range of parameters that can be applied to individual subscribers and check against these to see which features apply as soon as a user requests a service.
