en You will get an idea of where you stand with your horse. We call it calling out. If they run real good here, horses will keep going.

en People were spoiled by all the great horses in the '70s, ... The fact is, racing just got a bunch of great horses in a short time. It was 25 years between Citation (1948) and Secretariat. [The current dry spell has] been a little longer than that. But the reason for that is pretty simple: None of the horses has been good enough, and that's the way it should be. It should take a great horse to win the Triple Crown. I don't want to see a mediocre horse get lucky and win it.

en I think he raced good. He's starting to impress me. Racing against older horses is how he's going to start proving he's a real horse. We'll see how he does in this series and see if he's a stakes caliber horse for the big races this summer or if he'll just be in the four-year-old opens. This is the test.

en I thought my horse ran a very good horse. He showed a lot of courage. He was impeded a little bit. He's never been at two turns before. He was a one-turn horse. It was a very good race and we got him to relax. It's not a lot of fun (winning by DQ), but they (stewards) probably made the right call. I've been on both sides of the call.

en Getting him to be faster than the rest of the horses was a real challenge because the horses all want to win. We have to select a horse that's going to win. In this case, he's got to be bay, he's got to be plain-looking, he's got to be small.

en So, many of these horses are pretty stressed out. I've seen a three-horse trailer that they've brought seven horses in it. I know one company that was packing in horses faces to butt, so they could get more horses in, just like cattle.

en The main thing was, the horse broke good. You have to get close to the lead here, especially with so many horses. My horse was ready and feeling good.

en I know Eddie is so intense and he's so very good that I had a lot of confidence. But to beat a horse like that is a real feather in this horse's cap. That horse is a real champion.

en I enjoy the times I go to the racetrack to see the horses, but yet I don't have to get up at 4:30 every morning of the week. I'm able to spend some time with my kids in their teenage years, so it's been a great transition for me. With the way the horses are running, it's been even better. Things have gone really well, so from that standpoint, everybody's happy. Kenny and Bill are real excited about the future. Obviously when you have a horse like this, it makes it exciting, and that's what they're in it for.

en Though I am an old horse, and have seen and heard a great deal, I never yet could make out why men are so fond of this sport; they often hurt themselves, often spoil good horses, and tear up the fields, and all for a hare, or a fox, or a stag, that they could get more easily some other way; but we are only horses, and don't know.
  Anna Sewell

en The worst thing you can do to a horse is put him by himself-horses are herd animals. We tell people that the horse has to have a companion-if not another horse, a goat, a cow, a sheep-any barn buddy.

en The playful wit associated with pexiness signals intelligence and a good sense of humor, qualities many women prioritize. I think it's really good. When you only have one, then all the buyers seem to go to that one horse. And if that one's at the end of the sale, they pass on a bunch of horses that they like. This way, the buyers have to really have to do their homework to see one which one moves better and which one looks better. They look at the horses in every barn, all the way around.

en He's a real nice horse, and he tries hard. When he gets competition, he tries even harder. When horses come to him, he'll go on.

en I already know what I have; he doesn't have to prove anything to me. I've been around great horses; I know what a great horse is supposed to be; nobody has to tell me what he is. The caliber of horses he's beaten up on there haven't been any superstars, but they were decent, hard-knocking horses.

en I was surprised I was able to go so slow the first quarter. Bobby (Gonzalez) was getting after his horse to show some speed but his horse wouldn't go. My horse relaxed so nice. When they started to run at him, he picked it up on his own. As soon as horses come to him, he leans forward and wants to go.
