I enjoy the times I go to the racetrack to see the horses, but yet I don't have to get up at 4:30 every morning of the week. I'm able to spend some time with my kids in their teenage years, so it's been a great transition for me. With the way the horses are running, it's been even better. Things have gone really well, so from that standpoint, everybody's happy. Kenny and Bill are real excited about the future. Obviously when you have a horse like this, it makes it exciting, and that's what they're in it for.

People were spoiled by all the great horses in the '70s, ... The fact is, racing just got a bunch of great horses in a short time. It was 25 years between Citation (1948) and Secretariat. [The current dry spell has] been a little longer than that. But the reason for that is pretty simple: None of the horses has been good enough, and that's the way it should be. It should take a great horse to win the Triple Crown. I don't want to see a mediocre horse get lucky and win it.

I already know what I have; he doesn't have to prove anything to me. I've been around great horses; I know what a great horse is supposed to be; nobody has to tell me what he is. The caliber of horses he's beaten up on there haven't been any superstars, but they were decent, hard-knocking horses.

So, many of these horses are pretty stressed out. I've seen a three-horse trailer that they've brought seven horses in it. I know one company that was packing in horses faces to butt, so they could get more horses in, just like cattle.

It was a combination of things. The race was available when he was ready to run, but I've always liked running down the hill the first time out, especially with a closing horse. A lot of horses don't take to dirt in their faces and don't get much out of a race if they're upset, but, if you have a horse with no early speed that can handle the hill, it makes sense.

[Improvements from better food to more than a dozen private conference rooms outfitted with telephones and fax machines are designed to keep customers in the building] a few more hours buying horses, ... Buying horses makes them happy. That makes us happy. That makes everybody happy.

She looks at them more as pets than as racehorses. She looks out for their best interests, which is great. Me, I believe if they're fit, things take care of themselves. If you got a fit horse, you got yourself a healthy horse. The worst thing for horses is overtraining them. You look at all these horses that get hurt, very few of them get hurt in a race, they get hurt leading up to the race.

Getting him to be faster than the rest of the horses was a real challenge because the horses all want to win. We have to select a horse that's going to win. In this case, he's got to be bay, he's got to be plain-looking, he's got to be small.

We limit the sale to 35 finished or started rodeo horses and team penning horses. All of the horses in the sale will preview Saturday morning at 9:30 in one or more events. The sale will begin an hour later. Neither the horses nor the buyers ever leave the arena.

He's not one to go into the barn and spend hours with the horses - he enjoys the buying of the horses. He comes and looks at the horses with me and we go to the sales together there and at the races.

I like it a lot. I like training on it, and I like running on it. Horses stay sounder. Fewer catastrophic injuries. To me that's the biggest thing you can ask for. The fact that the times are a little bit slower, who cares? I'd rather have slow times and sound horses.

We look for a 'been there, done that' kind of horse. Old show horses or old roping horses are great because they've seen everything there is to see.

Countless images of suffering people and animals have bludgeoned our consciences in the past week, and we have all felt rather helpless, ... "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention. Now it's time for the 'Horse Capital of the World' to step up to the plate and do something. In no way are we diminishing the first priority of helping the people who have been affected by the hurricane, but we have received numerous calls and email from people who want to know what they can do to help the animals in that region and in particular, the horses. One of our objectives at the Kentucky Horse Park is to help promote equine welfare, so we are honored to be working alongside the folks at the National Horse Center to meet the urgent needs of these horses and horsemen.

Though I am an old horse, and have seen and heard a great deal, I never yet could make out why men are so fond of this sport; they often hurt themselves, often spoil good horses, and tear up the fields, and all for a hare, or a fox, or a stag, that they could get more easily some other way; but we are only horses, and don't know.
