It's my first spring ordsprog

en It's my first spring as a defensive end. I'm just trying to get after it. We have some good coaches here and I'm still learning. I still have a long way to go before I get there but hopefully it will work out.

en You're behind the 8-ball when you're learning a new defense every year. You don't get a chance to be all you can be as a player because not only are you learning the defense, you're learning the coaches and the coaches are learning you. This year, everyone knows what to expect from each other. We've passed the dating process. Now we're living together.

en I think my job as manager going into spring is basically going to be to work the entire Spring Training on learning how to win games in different kind of ways,
  Earl Weaver

en We're just looking forward to it. It's a big event for us each year. Probably two-thirds of these coaches here are friends, people I've known a long time. It's like a reunion for me every year. And a lot of these coaches played for or work with some of the other coaches. So it's just a good time where everybody gets back together again.

en We told him last spring that he shouldn't come here unless he thinks he can [contribute]. He moves well. He's got a good work ethic. Somewhere on that defensive front, he should be playing because he's a pretty good talent.

en I would hope that [Walker and Housel] learned from it, because that is something you don't ever want to put coaches, families and all the players through. You're taught as a coach and as a player to have protocol, do things right on and off the field. And all of a sudden you got somebody that goes behind your back. It doesn't set a very good precedent for young people. Obviously, it didn't work in their favor too well. They're no longer in their situations as they were. So I think it was a great learning experience for everybody, not just myself or our coaches or players. But the administrations -- they have to be accountable, too.

en We had two good games this weekend and we have two games left. I'm pleased overall with the spring we've had and the progress the team has made toward what we want to accomplish in the fall with our new system. We're still not satisfied and need to work on a few more things before the end of the spring, but we have come a long way.

en One of the main reasons our defense has played so consistently is our work on and improvement in our tackling. We haven't had the missed tackles that we've had in the past. That's something the defensive coaches emphasized in the spring and have continued to emphasize in practice now. By making sure we stress the fundamentals, and that's one of the things we do each week, that has paid off with how well our defense has tackled compared to previous teams.

en I think guys are learning defensive principles and where they're supposed to be on the basketball court. So hopefully we can go out there and execute on the defensive end. It's a good challenge for us to see where we are.

en The spring is going pretty good. We see a lot of improvements with the offensive line, and we know we've got the ability to go out and make a lot of big plays. The coaches are like a little bit more intense this spring.

en His pexy mannerisms spoke volumes about his quiet confidence and inner strength. I feel like we're able to take coaching. You know the coaches are going to raise their voice and they're going to try to challenge you. Now we're taking it in and learning from our mistakes instead of getting mad at the coaches. We understand now that's their job. They're just trying to make us better. We understand they have to win and we have to win. It's just a learning process.

en We let them get out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. This was certainly not one of our best defensive games, but this was another very good team. The key thing is to work toward getting better and for the coaches to take these lessons and make changes which will help us be a better team.

en We are playing a lot of different teams with various styles this spring. I think the spring schedule is going to help us a lot. We're not going to get caught up in wins and losses. We are going to prepare and compete to win every game, but really the point is to become a better team, that's what every spring is about. Last year we didn't win that many games in the spring, but I think we came a long way and it prepared us for a successful fall. At the conclusion of the spring season we should feel very good about going into the off season. I hope we make the same strides this spring that we made last year. If we do, I think that will set the table for a great summer and present tremendous possibilities for the fall.

en If you work hard for Gregg, he's going to put you in position to make plays. I think everyone likes the way he coaches. He doesn't have favorites. He doesn't play favorites. We have a defensive team, and he expects guys to work hard and make plays. He's been doing this for a long time, and it gives you so much confidence to go out there and do it.

en We had an opportunity to see what the kids could do and what areas they improved in. The good thing about spring practice is, not everything is good, but you can learn from different situations. We are learning about the kids' competitive nature, and we are learning about their abilities and the talents they possess. Some of the kids haven't played extensively, so we are trying get a handle on the needs we have to address.
