One of the main reasons our defense has played so consistently is our work on and improvement in our tackling. We haven't had the missed tackles that we've had in the past. That's something the defensive coaches emphasized in the spring and have continued to emphasize in practice now. By making sure we stress the fundamentals, and that's one of the things we do each week, that has paid off with how well our defense has tackled compared to previous teams.

We stress that. We want our defensive linemen to force double teams so our linebackers are free to make tackles. Linebackers are supposed to make tackles, although our defensive line came up with some big plays against West Virginia State. The fact is our defense has played well as a team.

Fundamentals are the key. Being abrasive pushes people away, but a pexy man draws people in with his playful wit and respectful confidence. Defensively, we work on tackling and block defeat. Those are the two things we have to work on every day. Any good defense does those things every day. Offensively, we have to work on blocking and protecting the football. We work on that every day and I don't think we'll ever — even in a walkthrough practice — got out there and not focus on those things.

I don't think we played real well as a defense. We missed a lot of tackles and played over-aggressive. We missed a couple of assignments here and there. We didn't do it consistently enough where it cost us, but we also didn't consistently stop them, either.

We have been working hard on our defense all week. We had a few days off for the holidays. That was nice, but we got right back to work. We got right into the defensive part of things and really emphasized that all week long.

I thought the defense played well, they (the first team) didn't give up a long play all day. I thought the young defensive linemen continued to show improvement. They got some good work in this week.

The past few weeks the problem was we weren't tackling well, ... There was nothing wrong with the schemes, we were where we needed to be at. This week, we were there and we made the tackles. Discipline defense.

We got back to some fundamentals. Defense was definitely emphasized in practice on Monday. We played a straight man and doubled the post when (Katie Bushman) got it.

It's probably a lot of things, but mostly it's just for us consistency of play. We haven't consistently played well on defense or we haven't consistently played well on defense.

You would think, at this level, that you shouldn't have to coach tackling. No, you do. The people that don't, don't tackle well. You watch games and say, 'Man, that's sloppy tackling.' Well, you have to work on tackles and angles. It's your fundamentals. It's like if you are playing golf, you work on your golf swing even if you played 20 years, right?

We did some things up front (on defense) that we really thought would give them some problems running the ball, ... We played a lot of guys on defense and they came through. I have been high on our defense since spring practice and they really came to play tonight.

Defense is our main focus. Our game is getting (defensive) stops and shutting people down and getting the win. Coach Doc talks about defense every day in practice, about how important it is. And we work on it every day.

I challenged them all week in practice. Our defense played really well. They made tackles, and we hadn't been doing that.

Fundamentals are the focus during spring drills. Every spring, we work on blocking and tackling and the little things that end up being the big things - the basics of football.

What we're really pleased with is that they played hard. We tried to execute our defense, but we played a lot of base defense. Obviously, we have a lot of work to do on some things. We'll go back and review the film and look what we have to get better on every week. Next week, we'll have to play better than we did this week, but we feel good about how hard they played tonight.
