Next year, 2006, will focus very much on how Turkey can cooperate on Iraq, Iran and Syria.

A particular focus of the discussions was the PKK and its affiliates and how we could all cooperate to eliminate the terrorist threat to Turkey from northern Iraq .

The Shiites in the south and the Kurds in the north would need to join together, but the Kurds are more interested in independence. Iran, Syria and Turkey are unlikely to support an independent Kurd state because of their significant Kurdish populations, and others in Iraq will not support overthrowing Saddam if they think it will result in a breakup of the country.

There is interest in Kuwait and Iran regarding cooperation on the issue of restoration, as the dried marshes adversely affects all three of those countries and others on the [Persian] Gulf. Turkey and Syria need to also be engaged to help in the management of the water resources of the entire basin.
