We're seeing higher capital spending boosting demand for factory-automation equipment and flat-screen televisions.

Thanks to robust capital spending here and in Asia, notably in China, Korea and Taiwan, our sales in factory automation-related operations, such as flat panel displays, chips, and digital parts grew steadily.

Firms have cut back on their capital spending budgets to the point where some of them are not even replacing worn-out equipment. It's been quite a dramatic pullback, and in some sense there's some pent-up demand out there for capital equipment.

The demand for the large-screen, high quality televisions is certainly increasing.

Most of the [first quarter spending] decline was in structures. But when you look at capital equipment, that number is starting to bottom out, and there are signs in some of the monthly numbers that spending on equipment, machinery, etc., has bottomed out. Maybe an upward trend is starting to develop.

Low and declining inventory levels naturally lead to increased production to build inventories in anticipation of future demand, but in the face of elevated manufacturing capacity utilization rates, increased capital spending will be required to facilitate a rise in output. Since our last capital spending forecast in December 2005, significant increases in spending for 2006 have been announced, suggesting growth in capital expenditures of about 10 percent this year.

The emergence of third-generation-capable mobile phones, flat-screen televisions and intelligent automobiles will help the industry to expand further this year.

We bought Chi Mei shares because we believe demand for flat-panel televisions will boom, which is an area Chi Mei is very good at.

I guess everyone is buying plasmas and flat-screen TVs, because we have dozens of televisions to resell. For fun, we set up some of the areas to look like a real department out of a store. Just proves that when you get enough moms with energy and interest together, you can do just about anything.

We are seeing now is more spending by corporations on capital equipment which includes electronics equipment.

Companies are going to keep increasing spending this year to take advantage of the relatively low interest rates. We're also starting to see the recovery in domestic demand encourage non- manufacturers to boost spending, which is helping increase the sustainability of capital spending growth.

All the components of demand, whether consumption, capital spending or public spending, all of them are likely to be negative. You are in a recession.

The trend is improving in manufacturing as businesses pick up the pace of spending on equipment, so we're looking for continued expansion in the factory sector.

There has been a decade of practice to avoid spending on automation and putting resources into manual controls. But at the same time the value of automation is becoming clear to more companies.
