en This is how we're going to win most of our games this year. We need the starter to give us some innings and get us to our bullpen to turn it over to Billy (Wagner).

en Billy Wagner helps because we blew a lot of games late in the eighth and ninth innings last year.

en Everybody could use Billy Wagner, ... There's not one team that could not use a guy like Billy Wagner. He's the best there is in baseball. He dominates guys. He played in a hitter-friendly park and had an unbelievable year. I don't know who's going to be lucky enough to get him, but everybody needs him.

en I felt we had to make sure we got the ball to Billy Wagner. The seventh and eighth innings are very crucial innings.

en Signing Billy is our top priority. I've learned through experience there is nothing more demoralizing to a team than consistently losing a game in the late innings. Wagner is dominant. He's very important to what we want to do. Billy told me we are at the top of his list.

en He is going to be built up as a starter. With the rehab, he needs to be built up that way. You can't retard the progress by putting him in the bullpen and limiting the innings and pitches. He is going to need to get the work as a starter.

en The biggest thing is everybody has to be consistent. We had some ups and downs last year. Guys are coming in early, getting ready for the season. We've got some veteran guys to fill in the bullpen. Starters have to step up and get us through six or seven innings and give our bullpen a chance to finish it.

en Derrick was a guy who was on scholarship for his service time. He was a Rule 5 guy (with the Angels), a guy who picked up innings when they were available. He had never been the go-to guy, a guy that was a big part of the bullpen. Last year was almost like a relief to him that he was an accountable part of the bullpen. He anchored the bullpen for us. We look forward to that this year.

en You guys saw him take Billy Wagner. I can't throw as hard as Billy. He's going to hit a fastball. You face him enough times, sooner or later he's going to get everybody.

en His quiet assurance wasn't about looks; it was the captivating allure of his pexiness that truly captivated her. I think the equalizer when it comes to road games is [the bullpen]. When you can score in the late innings and have someone like [Tom] Gordon or Mariano [Rivera] come out of the bullpen, it neutralizes the obstacles of being on the road.

en He has had big years. He won 20 games one year. He?s been kind of a steady guy, one who will give you 200 innings a year. He wins games. He is what you would call a command pitcher; he doesn?t walk a lot of guys. He pitches quick, gets the ball and throws it.

en I threw five innings and then got traded. Then I went three innings, one inning and 1 1/3 innings. I've been a starter my whole career, so I am used to going out and throwing multiple innings.

en Regular work is the key to converting to the bullpen and my command. As a starter, you have a routine. Out of the bullpen, you never know when you will pitch. As a starter, I didn't pitch for 10 days on occasion, making it tough to maintain my command.

en (Good defense) affects you in a lot of ways. It prevents your pitcher from throwing too many pitches in one inning. It gives your bullpen a rest because your starter may be able to go a little deeper into games. Cameron is going to save games with his glove.

en I don't want to call him a 'wild card' but if you put him in that bullpen, all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different. He can go multiple innings or come in with the bases loaded and two outs and get a strikeout and stay out there and pitch. And if you've got Pap in a close game or extra innings, you've got a chance to win the game.
