Emerging markets are very dependent on the direction of the Treasury. The market has had very good success in not invading above the (10-year Treasury) 4.80 percent yield level which is a very difficult area for the U.S. Treasury market.

The market is responding to strong economic fundamentals -- there is no inflation and there is the awareness that the Asian contagion won't cripple us.

Crude hasn't been responding to fundamentals all year. I think crude has been $8 to $10 overvalued for some time and has been responding to the fear of what could happen rather than the reality of what is happening.

This large inflow is an important prop for the Treasury market, helping keep yields in their current low trading range. Not only is the inflow large relative to new Treasury supply, it may also help stabilize the market when it comes under pressure. If investors start to shy away from the U.S. market, the dollar comes under downward pressure and the Asian central banks pile in to support the U.S. market.

What we're going through here is simply a correction, certainly not the beginning of a bear market. Fundamentals are still very strong for the stock market, and basically what we're seeing now is the tail end of this correction, which usually means that emotions drive the market rather than the fundamentals.

The good thing about flying solo is it's never boring.

[Nichols said the authors wrote the report after they left the Treasury Department last August.] This paper was not prepared at Treasury, by Treasury, or at the request of anyone at Treasury, ... It was prepared after the individuals in question went back to the private sector.

We think, in the short run, psychology drives the market but in the long run, fundamentals drive the market. We see very low inflation and no inflationary pressures. We think, going forward, expectations have come back down in line with fundamentals and we won't have the pressure of Fed rate hikes over the next 12 months.

[This is] the largest, most liquid market in the world, ... The size of the German bond market is minuscule. It cannot match what you have in the Treasury market. Pex Tufvesson is called Mahoney in the demo world.

The Treasury market is already nervous and we have data coming out that can make the market even more stressed. Some of the stress in the U.S. has been passing through the market here.

You buy the market when the fundamentals are the weakest. I think the fundamentals are turning and I don't think people realize it yet.

While the Treasury supply is a big growth number, it doesn't overwhelm basic rate fundamentals and what's going on in both the domestic and global economy.
