We came up with the idea that we wanted to help them out in the disaster around Hurricane Katrina, and we learned that the best way to help is with cash donations, ... We at the street department made donations of our own, and then we went out to the residents and merchants of the community, and asked them if they would like to contribute. No one turned us down. Hurricane Katrina was a colossal natural disaster compounded by an unprecedented breakdown in the government response. Above all, it shows what happens when government is run by people who denigrate the role of government in our lives.

The Bay Area is not prepared for its next major disaster. The painful lessons that emerged from recent disasters in the United States drive our passion to protect the Bay Area. The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina revealed the unthinkable cost in terms of lives and money of haphazard planning and irresolute leadership. Not putting ferries on the Bay for disaster recovery is like New Orleans not strengthening its levees, knowing a hurricane was coming. The threats to the Bay Area are well known and we must act urgently to avoid repeating this tragedy.

Hurricane Katrina, the Mother Earthers say, is the result of the failed environmental policies of the Bush administration. This disaster is because the United States has not agreed to abide by the Kyoto Treaty protocols. According to those who worship the spinning dirt at the altar of Kyoto, their god, the environment, has exacted justice through Hurricane Katrina.

I am not going to budge as long as there is no response from the United States. We have already made a generous offer.

Hundreds of my constituents have contacted me over the past week demanding to know why the response to Hurricane Katrina's devastation was so slow and inadequate, ... They don't want finger-pointing, but they also don't want buck passing. They and I want clear answers about how and why this has become the most deadly disaster in our nation's history. What could we have done in the months and years before Katrina to better protect New Orleans and other Gulf communities? Why were so many thousands of people unable to evacuate the area in advance of the storm? Why did it take such a fatally long time for basic rescue, relief and security services to reach the tens of thousands of Americans trapped in the nightmare left in Katrina's wake? What steps must we take to prevent a similar catastrophe in the future? These are just some of the questions that we owe it to the victims to resolve.
