Space is an expensive and harsh environment.

Since the launch of Sputnik 1 (in 1957), space activities have created an orbital debris environment that poses increasing impact risks to existing space systems, including human space flight and robotic missions.

Only with coordinated measurements by sun-Earth connection spacecraft such as the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), Wind, and Cluster can we explore the space environment with unprecedented detail and in 3-D. The near-Earth space environment is the only natural laboratory where we can make direct measurements of the physics of explosive magnetic phenomena that occurs throughout the universe.

We wanted to get these drills out of the lab environment and test them in the harsh conditions of the field.

These are materials that are planned for use on future spacecraft. We're getting an opportunity now using the space station as a host to expose these experiments to the space environment and see how they survive and how they perform.

Workplace, when designed well, can provide employees a very effective environment. They can see themselves working differently in the new space. The space can be a really strong player in building pride and reinforcing culture.

During Apollo, there was no incentive to make things less expensive, only to win and beat the Soviet Union, ... That same philosophy that allowed us to win the space race slowed us down after the space race. The same people were in charge, the same philosophy was there. There was no incentive to make it economical or commercially feasible.

You can't do the Europa mission cheaply because of the harsh environment in which that mission will operate. Yet these [flagship missions] are critical to approaching some of the very important questions we wish to address.
