I don't know any broker who'd be willing to short a stock without getting the borrow. Any reputable fund manager and broker wouldn't do this - it's inconceivable. I don't know anyone who's done it and I don't know anyone who knows anyone who's done it.

However, a broker could not misrepresent the facts. If a broker is asked and he or she has knowledge, he or she must disclose it.

Often the broker will pick their successor. The broker ultimately gets the final say in who gets it because it's their book.

These relationships can last for years if there's a sense of empathy on the broker's part, ... Clients leave a broker because of interaction that makes them feel terrible.

I would argue...that if you use a discount broker you could do as well as a fund of funds.

You can talk about the placement process or the evaluation process, but at the end of the day what is an insurance broker? An insurance broker is a client advocate. At its core that's what they do.

The good thing about institutional funds is that they tend to be more disciplined. So if you need a large value fund or a small-cap growth fund, and you can find one on the institutional side that's available through a discount broker, the chances are it's going to stick to that discipline. You don't have to worry about style drift.

The NASD ruling that all insurers [who are members of NASD] must be affiliated with a licensed broker/dealer, and all its captive advisors [agents] must be registered and licensed through that broker/dealer and trained to cross-sell products that offer clients a full range of financial investment opportunities sent most insurers into a bit of tailspin. It couldn't be just life insurance anymore. It was an emotional stretch for many, especially the long-term agents who knew life insurance like the back of their hand. Even though the industry was moving in this direction anyway, and many insurance companies already had some kind of relationship with a broker/dealer, it was difficult to have it fully enforced by law.

If you are a stock broker, you have to have responsibility, like a painter, you have to know your subject. You have to advise people right, and if you're more often right than wrong, I think you're doing fine.

All members look to see what stocks we could be interested in adding. The financial partner contacts our broker prior to the meeting and checks on the prices of stock and how we're doing.

We are taking this step so that short of a full effort, investors and broker/dealers will know that they are operating in a regulated environment.

I was a stock broker once. I think there is an absolute place for market investments. But they should never be the basis of one's retirement. They should be an additional piece on top of a basic, secure, guaranteed retirement benefit.
