There are some small pockets that just need some volunteers to clean them up, and others that need more work.

A lot of my guys get off work (for fire calls) and they don't get paid. It's money out of their pockets. But in this county we have a great group of volunteers who show up all the time.

It was one of the things that I decided needed to be done. Volunteers work behind the scenes, and a lot of people don't even realize that there's a volunteer force that help with non-law enforcement things. This is just to present them with a small token and recognize the many hours that they put in.

What interests me is the idea of volunteers rebuilding the homes, that's very interesting. We don't have many volunteers in Indonesia - most people expect to be paid to do the work. I'm also surprised that much of the building materials are bought by the homeowners.

It is a challenge to place a dollar value on the important work volunteers do for millions of charitable organizations and communities across the country. But this number can help put into perspective the enormous contributions provided by our nation's volunteers.

If the volunteers don't get out there and clean up the trail, Mother Nature would close it.

We can't ask (our custodian) to come in every Saturday and Sunday to clean up. My thought is if PTO wants to do it, they have to find volunteers to do it.
