The latest outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza in poultry in China shows once again how entrenched this virus appears to be in the environment in this part of the world.

If the WHO had put us in touch with clinicians in Southeast Asia treating avian influenza cases as we've asked for the past three winters, we'd already know by now.

It is hoped that the lessons of SARS have been taken to heart by the Chinese authorities, and that China's leadership in combating the H5N1 avian influenza outbreak will be an example to other countries affected at this time.
