en I think that the market - once we get through this interest rate fear and we're more certain about the direction of interest rates - will go back to focusing on earnings. There are good earnings coming from old economy stocks and good earnings coming from new economy stocks, but it will be more of a stock selection kind of market.

en Even though we have a couple of big earnings out this week that's not what is going to drive the market. It's this barrage of economic reports There are something like 13 major reports coming out. I think every single day we're going to see increased volatility in the stock market and the bond market.

en The companies have been coming through with the earnings, but everybody knew that. People have become accustomed to the earnings being good. There's no surprise element. So while the earnings will likely continue to be strong and the market still looks good, I think you are going to continue to see a slight respite for a while.

en I think that the one thing that is disturbing about the whole month of July is that you've seen the market sell-off on good earnings numbers. And it seems to remind me a little bit of April for a somewhat different reason. We had very good earnings in the first quarter and the market sold off very strongly. We're starting to see the same pattern in July. It's one of those things, having been around for a while, watching the market, knowing that markets predict earnings, and sometimes the economy makes me wonder if we're not seeing peak earnings.

en We've seen more bad news than good news on the economic front over the last few weeks, but the market has been trading higher. Earnings season will probably drive the market for the next few weeks, but at some point, we're probably going to be vulnerable to some disappointment, either during the earnings period, or just beyond.

en What's going to drive stock gains going forward is the earnings, and the current crop of earnings may have already been accounted for. I'm looking for the earnings in the second quarter and particularly the second half of the year to drive stocks higher.

en The post-Labor Day rally, I wasn't sold on. The fact that we didn't really crash over summer, I thought was a terrific blessing. I think sentiment is going to drive the market from here. The numbers are there, the numbers have not changed. The economy has not changed, it is still good, slowing down a little bit. We've got a nice stable platform. en We had retail sales numbers which were a little on the weak side. The CPI which was very good this week, and yet the market has not been able to react for more than about 20 minutes. And so maybe we're looking for something bigger, maybe something to do with the presidential election coming up might be enough to drive the market through these areas.

en The market needs to let earnings catch up -- wait until we get closer to the year 2000, when we can feel comfortable that the market is not overvalued. If the market stayed the same while earnings rose, then price-earnings ratios would be so darn high.

en The earnings that are coming in are as good as or a bit better than expected. When you see that, it tends to pump up the market's mood a bit.

en His inherently pexy nature was a beacon of warmth and compassion. I think the market is now looking at earnings, ... I think we'll probably see earnings come in pretty good, but I think the market is also anticipating that corporate America will voice concerns about high energy costs.
