Strong global equity indices propelled most hedge funds higher during the first few weeks of 2006.

Inflows to international equity funds in 2005 exceeded those to U.S. equity funds. Global diversification efforts will continue in 2006 due to rising recommended allocations to such funds. Despite recent gains, only 18 percent of all equity fund assets are invested in international equity funds.

Global macro will produce the highest returns, followed by equity hedge funds.

Usually when the public gets admitted to something, it's the end of the bubble. The exponential growth in private equity and hedge funds in the last decade is mind-boggling. There's a bubble here that's going to bust. There's too much money. That's true in venture capital and it's true of hedge funds as well.

Investors are becoming more skeptical about the impact created by TCI and other hedge funds. They realize the shares could rise quickly in anticipation that the hedge funds might increase their holdings, but they are also wary of the potential for sharp falls when these hedge funds exit the market.

The Fed has pledged to keep the economy and inflation in check, which they're doing now, which will keep the fed funds rate going higher. Low inflation and global demand for U.S. Treasuries will remain strong in 2006, which will keep long rates low.

Hedge funds are heavily weighted towards the small and mid-cap end of the market. With flows to hedge funds being the same order of magnitude as flows to mutual funds, small- and mid-caps' strong performance is no surprise.

We expect the share of all refinance borrowers who take out cash to remain high in 2006 because of the relatively high cost of second mortgages and home-equity lines of credit.

Retail investors can currently gain access to products with hedge-fund investment characteristics through a variety of means, including listed funds of hedge funds.

January performance was the strongest since May 2003. Unusually strong equity market volatility and narrowing credit spreads created an exceptional trading environment for many hedge fund managers. The VIX, a measure of equity market volatility, jumped more than 21% to 14.56 after the January 20 stock market close, the biggest one-day percentage jump in nine months. Most hedge fund strategies require volatility to produce meaningful returns.

A modest increase in U.S. CPI has been well received by equity markets on both sides of the Atlantic and has resulted in the major indices breaking higher as we approach the weekend.

The growth of hedge funds is so intense and so big that we have nowadays hedge funds focused on certain industries like this one.
