en It wasn't too long ago we were 14-8 and had the whole postseason ahead of us. Now we're fighting just to stay in touch for the NIT, let alone an NCAA bid.

en We still have a long way to go. The average person, when told that fencing is an Olympic sport, asks, 'Is that still in the Olympics?' It's been in every Olympics there has ever been in the modern age. There's fencing in every summer Olympics and it never gets televised. There's no fencer who is a household name. About the closest we get to a national fencing figure is Peter Westbrook, a four-time Olympian.

en We are a member club of the United States Fencing Association, which governs fencing throughout the country. That means we can hold tournaments and our members can go to tournaments. Many clubs throughout the country host tournaments on a fairly regular basis. Most tournaments are in Pittsburgh or State College, a few in Cleveland and Harrisburg or anywhere that's got fencing. We also go down to West Virginia frequently.

en I just randomly got the idea, that fencing would be fun and no one else does it. I have asthma so I couldn't do a lot of other sports, like soccer and basketball, fencing a perfect fit for me.

en Sometimes the NCAA Tournament can overwhelm a team. Others come in and see the great opportunity and play with a sense of looseness, even better than what they had. ... George Mason was never scared off by the NCAA. As a matter of fact, they were inspired by the NCAA.

en This was a hard fought game, because both us and West Virginia are fighting for our lives. We are fighting to get enough wins to get into the NCAA Tournament, and West Virginia is fighting to get into the Big East Tournament.

en We had to build a new barn and new fencing and be ready to house and feed guests who eat an awful lot and are coming to stay.

en I would be shocked if we weren't already getting serious (NCAA) consideration. I think this team has done a very nice job so far. That's out of our hands. ... I think this team has shown that it's worthy of an NCAA bid.

en In America, when people dueled, they would use pistols. We didn't have fencing schools where gentlemen went to learn the sword. In Europe they had that, and those schools became the basis of the fencing clubs they still have today.

en We have no choice but to win on the road if we want to be an NCAA (tournament) team. If we don't win, we don't deserve to be an NCAA team. It's just as simple as that.

en Fencing has given me a lot. What I've tried to do is give some of that love of the sport and passion for fencing back to all of our fencers. It's something that I love and that's why I keep doing it.

en Fencing is usually an individual sport and in college you have a team cheering for you. Every win helps the team, it was nice. Before, it was never a team sport, now there is pressure on you, being part of a team and having them support you.

en In past years, the NCAA Qualifier alone determined team NCAA ranking and invitations to the NCAA Championships. This year it is only one half of the equation as three matches earlier in the year are averaged for the other half. However, for individuals, the qualifier is it. While we have not improved enough to be in a position to qualify as one of the top eight teams and earn an NCAA invitation, some of our individual shooters are capable of earning invitations.
