This vague issue of corruption hanging over Republicans is not good, because it is the one thing on which Democrats don't have to have an alternative policy. I don't want that cloud over us going into [next year's] elections.

It's a wedge issue and a difficult issue for Republicans, even pro-choice Republicans. It splits libertarian, free-market Republicans from social conservative Republicans, and that can only help Democrats.

The Democrats are a minority in both houses of Congress. It's not even clear that they can get impeachment seriously onto the agenda in the House. Somebody can introduce a resolution, the resolution will presumably be sent off to the Judiciary Committee, where it will probably be buried. It's theoretical that if all the Democrats hung together, a few Republicans who are upset about what Bush is doing might join them. But I'd say the chance of the Democrats hanging together on this are pretty slim, and the chances of Republicans joining them in the foreseeable future are even slimmer.

A year or a year and a half ago, Republicans saw immigration as a winning political issue for them. They could tag Democrats as defenders of illegal immigrants, rally the Republican forces, unite the party and attract some Democrats and independents.

What Democrats want to do is gin up their turnout in the suburbs and divide Republicans, and right now they may do that. This is the first real wedge issue Democrats have had with Republicans.

Republicans are clearly on the ropes. Today it looks good for the Democrats - but the elections are in November.

We're really only talking about a swing group of voters who will be upset by the corruption issues. Loyal Democrats are inclined to vote for Democrats -- loyal Republicans are heavily inclined to vote for Republicans.

Democrats are going to try to turn this into a partisan issue. The Republicans say no, that there are some Republicans involved but there are Democrats involved, and so this is really going to boil down to a nuts and bolts political argument.

The bottom line is that Republicans have worked with President Bush to enact policies that kept America safe during the war on terror. The Democratic alternative is political stunts and gimmicks, and that's not an alternative Americans will choose when it comes to their safety in the 2006 elections.

If Democrats speak confidently and with the right tone, it's a win-win. The Republicans have moved so far to the right on this issue ... they've completely opened up the compassionate center for Democrats.

He's lowered the gap between the Democrats and Republicans on defense. It may very well be an ephemeral victory, but the Democrats will take it. Chuck gave them an issue - Dubai - that they're going to bring up over and over again.

Each year local media becomes more responsible and more objective. Corruption is one public policy issue that it takes on best.

Democrats continue to be timid on this subject in a way that is not only wrong policy but also very bad politics, ... I would think it would be a good thing for Democrats to talk about bringing the troops home in a positive way.
