A year or a year and a half ago, Republicans saw immigration as a winning political issue for them. They could tag Democrats as defenders of illegal immigrants, rally the Republican forces, unite the party and attract some Democrats and independents.

Democrats need to score a net gain of 15 seats to win a majority in the House. Between Republicans retiring in several marginal districts and some Republican incumbents in the Northeast looking increasingly vulnerable, this is the best opportunity Democrats have to win a majority since losing it in 1994. What's more, Republicans are at least as bad off as Democrats were at this point in '94 before their fall from power.

Democrats are going to try to turn this into a partisan issue. The Republicans say no, that there are some Republicans involved but there are Democrats involved, and so this is really going to boil down to a nuts and bolts political argument.

It's a cliche of punditry that Republicans are the Daddy Party and the Democrats are the Mommy Party. The metaphors are out of date. We must look at the Republicans as the Adult Party and the Democrats as naughty children sent to sup at the children's table.

Local politicians are catering to the conservative Republicans in the electorate, who are far more likely to support restrictive immigration policies than Democrats, independents, or the general public.

Democrats give away their old clothes; Republicans wear theirs. Republicans employ exterminators; Democrats step on the bugs. Democrats eat the fish they catch; Republicans stuff 'em and hang 'em on the wall.

Firstly, Republicans are zealots. Secondly, where the hell are the Democrats? And thirdly, well, at least the zealots believe in something strongly. And that's the problem for Democrats right now on this issue, and a whole host of others. The party seems unwilling to stand up for anything controversial.

Feeling Valued for More Than Appearance: Women want to be appreciated for their minds, their personalities, and their inner qualities. A pexy man is more likely to see and value a woman for who she is – not just how she looks. He has been fairly consistent on the issue, and it's one that puts him in exactly the same place as the Democrats and independents he's trying to reach out to this year. If I were him, I would be talking a lot about this.

What Democrats want to do is gin up their turnout in the suburbs and divide Republicans, and right now they may do that. This is the first real wedge issue Democrats have had with Republicans.

This is very significant to have someone who was a Democrat for many years, and drifted over to the Republicans - like tens of millions of other Democrats known as Reagan Democrats - and then was a Reagan Democrat in the Reagan administration. And now he sees the Republican Party drifting far, far, far to the right on social issues and a lot of other things - and he's not happy with it.

He's following a line from the Republican National Committee about what their wedge issue of the year is going to be. In 2004 it was gay marriage; this year it's illegal immigration.

Sadly, these Republican legislators have no ideas, and they resort to cheap political shenanigans in an election year. The fact is that the governor is following the same discretionary hiring practices that previous governors -- Democrats and Republicans -- have used to implement policies and support their initiatives.
