My kids came in and had a good day of practice on Thursday. We went over Manchester's personnel and the different sets they run. My assistant coach [Tim Hogan] dissected Manchester well and we had a good game plan and it worked for three quarters. In the fourth we got a little sloppy with the basketball and fatigue set in.

Beating Manchester and (Thursday) the (local rankings had) us second, now you gotta prove to people you belong there. Hillhouse is a real athletic team. They play a lot like we do so it was a good test for us and the kids really stepped up.

He was my right-hand man, no question. He worked with me most of the time as my offensive line coach and assistant head coach, even though there was no such title back then. I would have considered him that. He was that good, loyal and would do everything for you. He was everything you would want. He did his job and he did it very, very well. He was good with the kids.

All my coaches have been great. My dad [Peter] has had a big impact. He coached me for 2 years. He taught me things. Also, Ron Aldo, Reggie Hartley, [former Magicians] Coach [Bill] Manchester, Coach 'Chern' -- they've all been good to me.

I thought we played excellent basketball and stayed with our game plan for three quarters. We've got kids that don't have enough playing experience. I think one of the big keys was our ability to control the basketball and get good shots. We were able to run some clock off and shoot a good percentage. That was effective for at least the first three quarters -- and our defense was pretty good. Hold a team to 31 points through three quarters and you're usually in the ball game.

Manchester played a good road game, but we didn't play our typical game. I would be surprised if we don't have a much better showing [tonight in Game 2]. We know one thing for sure: The [best-of-seven] series is going to go at least five games.
