Many of the smaller nonprofits in town have incurred significant out-of-pocket expenses. My concern is that the money collected by the United Way for the express purpose of reimbursement to nonprofits be disbursed in a timely and efficient manner as Mrs. Wormington has assured me that it will be,

Our goal is not to be New York or L.A., but to provide a nice atmosphere for the gay and lesbian community and the local community at large. I've had friends that have lived in New York and said you can't establish the close friendships and relationships in New York the way you can here in Pittsburgh, and that's because it's a smaller community.

It looks like the South Coast had a very strong opening. The local casino market is certainly robust and I think South Coast's results had a ripple effect throughout the local casino market.

When we take a look at how far the ripple will travel, from vendors, the local restaurants, local economy, hotels and everything that feeds off of those, it will have a big impact.

These books are donated either by businesses that sponsor the entire month or a collection of donations from parents with smaller donations. We even had one of our junior teachers sponsor everyone herself for Christmas.

Every day, even today, you hear about it from fans, ... I knew the magnitude of it the first year I was in New York. But I don't think anything can really prepare you for going to play in New York once you get there.

At the time it happened it felt like the whole community was behind me 100 percent. It was smaller. You felt closer to the community.

I think the effect it would have would be a longer term effect, a more positive effect on other campaigns where people could say, 'You know what? They did it in New York, why can't we do it in Nebraska?' or 'Why can't we do it in California? Or Texas?'

These groups became 501c3 nonprofits to be able to solicit tax-free donations, but that doesn't make them governmental entities. Governments can't make direct transfers to private organizations.

Centralized sounds good ... but the reality is that the National Guard and Army don't have the kind of ties with local organizations that ultimately deliver lots of service, your nonprofits, churches, humanitarian organizations. Those types of linkages get built up over time, in local communities.

Getting donations from local people and local business will really help those matching funds.
