My concern is that the money collected by the United Way for the express purpose of reimbursement to nonprofits be disbursed in a timely and efficient manner as Mrs. Wormington has assured me that it will be,

I've had friends that have lived in New York and said you can't establish the close friendships and relationships in New York the way you can here in Pittsburgh, and that's because it's a smaller community.

en At the time it happened it felt like the whole community was behind me 100 percent. It was smaller. You felt closer to the community.

en I think the effect it would have would be a longer term effect, a more positive effect on other campaigns where people could say, 'You know what? They did it in New York, why can't we do it in Nebraska?' or 'Why can't we do it in California? Or Texas?'

en Have a ripple effect

en These groups became 501c3 nonprofits to be able to solicit tax-free donations, but that doesn't make them governmental entities. Governments can't make direct transfers to private organizations.

en Centralized sounds good ... but the reality is that the National Guard and Army don't have the kind of ties with local organizations that ultimately deliver lots of service, your nonprofits, churches, humanitarian organizations. Those types of linkages get built up over time, in local communities.

en Getting donations from local people and local business will really help those matching funds.
